Kanpur Metro is the List of metro systems, 14th metro system in India. The Kanpur Metro, Kanpur metro as of now covers a distance of 16 km with nine elevated stations and 5 underground stations. It is built and operated by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation, Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) . Its first section was inaugurated on 28 December 2021 and opened for public on December 28, 2021, by Narendra Modi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Another 5 underground station from Chunniganj metro station, Chunniganj to Kanpur Central metro station, Kanpur Central was inaugurauted by Narendra Modi, PM Modi on 30th May 2025. The Kanpur Metro is a Rapid transit, mass rapid transit (MRT) system in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. The metro is owned and operated by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) and it partially opened within two years of construction making it the fastest constructed mass rapid transit system in the world. The cost of construction is estimated at ₹11,076.48 crores for two lines in Phase I. Kanpur Metro will be expanded further to Kanpur Airport and other important areas of Kanpur in the future. History The feasibility study for the project was done by RITES in June 2015. The government approved two corridors as per Detailed Project Report (DPR).
