Essex
Essex () is a county in the East of England. One of the home counties, it borders Suffolk and Cambridgeshire to the north, the North Sea to the east, Hertfordshire to the west, Kent across the estuary of the River Thames to the south, and Greater London to the south and south-west. There are three cities in Essex: Southend, Colchester and Chelmsford, in order of population. For the purposes of government statistics, Essex is placed in the East of England region. There are four definitions of the extent of Essex, the widest being the ancient county. Next, the largest is the former postal county, followed by the ceremonial county, with the smallest being the administrative county—the area administered by the County Council, which excludes the two unitary authorities of Thurrock and Southend-on-Sea. Southend University Hospital
Southend University Hospital is an NHS hospital located in Westcliff-on-Sea, Southend-on-Sea, Essex. It is managed by Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust. History In 1887, to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, a public fund was started with the aim of building a hospital, and the site for Southend's first hospital was bought for £350 (in Warrior Square, near to Southend High Street). Built at a cost of £1,287 4s 6d, Southend Victoria Hospital was opened in May 1888. By Christmas, with eight beds and two cots, it had treated 61 patients at an average weekly cost of 4s 6d (22.5p). In order to allow expansion a new site was identified at Westcliff-on-Sea: building work on the new hospital, which was designed by Henry Percy Adams, began in 1930 and the new building was officially opened by the Rt. Basildon University Hospital
Basildon University Hospital is an acute general hospital in Basildon, Essex. It is managed by the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust. History The hospital opened in 1973. Facilities which it replaced included St. Andrew's Hospital in Billericay which subsequently became a regional plastic surgery and rehabilitation unit. The Essex Cardiothoracic Centre, which was built at a cost of £60 million, was opened by Prime Minister Gordon Brown at Basildon University Hospital in July 2007. Broomfield Hospital
Broomfield Hospital is an acute district general hospital in Chelmsford, Essex. It is managed by the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust. History The hospital, originally known as Essex County Hospital, was designed as a hospital for the treatment of tuberculosis patients and was built between June 1937 and 1940. It had "butterfly" wings that caught the sun for the benefit of the patients. During the 1960s the hospital diversified from tuberculosis treatment and dealt with more general surgery, orthopaedics and general medicine. A large outpatients clinic was also built at this time. By the early 1980s facilities included an accident and emergency department, pharmacy, rehabilitation department, operating theatres, intensive therapy unit and new specialised wards. A CT Scanner was unveiled by the Princess Royal in 1987 and she returned to open a new ward block in 1987. The Princess Alexandra Hospital is an acute general hospital in Harlow, Essex, England. It is managed by the Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust. South Ockendon Hospital (known locally as The Colony) was a hospital for patients with severe learning difficulties and for patients with major and rare mental health illnesses in South Ockendon, Essex, England. History The site acquired for the hospital, which once formed part of the South Ockendon Hall estate, was known as Little Mollands Farm. It opened as the South Ockendon Colony, a facility for "mental defectives", in 1932. It joined the National Health Service in 1948 when it was renamed the South Ockendon Hospital.
