Gongola State is a former administrative division of Nigeria. It was created on 3 February 1976 from the Adamawa and Sardauna Provinces of North State, together with the Wukari Division of the then Benue-Plateau State Benue-Plateau State is a former administrative division of Nigeria. Wilberforce Juta
Wilberforce Juta (3 May 1944 – 15 August 2020) was a Nigerian politician who served as governor of Gongola State, Nigeria in 1983 during the Nigerian Second Republic, and later was appointed Nigerian High Commissioner to Zimbabwe. Background Juta was a Njanyi by origin from Adamawa State, previously part of Gongola State. He received a bachelor's degree from Concordia College, Morehead, Minnesota in January 1970, and then studied for a master's degree in English Literature at the University of Iowa. Second Republic and subsequent military regime Juta was elected as Deputy Governor of Gongola State on the platform of the Great Nigeria Peoples Party (GNPP) in 1979. When the Governor Abubakar Barde resigned early in 1983, Juta was appointed Governor. In January 1983, the state was affected by an outbreak of rinderpest. States Of Nigeria
Nigeria is a federation of 36 states and 1 federal capital territory. Each of the 36 states is a semi-autonomous political unit that shares powers with the federal government as enumerated under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is the capital territory of Nigeria, and it is in this territory that the capital city of Abuja is located. The FCT is not a state but is administered by elected officials who are supervised by the federal government. Each state is subdivided into local government areas (LGAs). There are 774 local governments in Nigeria. Under the constitution, the 36 states are co-equal but not supreme because sovereignty resides with the federal government. Abubakar Salihu
Air Commodore Abubakar Salihu (1949 – 9 January 2020) was a Nigerian Air Force officer who was appointed military governor of Gongola and Adamawa States. He also served in many senior level defence military roles. Early career Salihu was born in 1949 in Kamba, Kebbi State. He later attended Barewa College, Zaria, Kaduna State. Upon completing Barewa College, Salihu enlisted into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA). He commissioned as a Regular Officer in NDA's Combatant Course. He completed the Aircraft Technical Officer's Course in West Germany, and studied at the Royal Military Training Centre in Chichester, England. Isa Mohammed
Wing Commander (retired) Isa Mohammed was appointed Military Governor of Gongola State, Nigeria from December 1987 to December 1989 during the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida. As governor, acting on instructions from Babangida's second in command, Vice Admiral Augustus Aikhomu, he refused to confer the staff of office to the Chief of the Kilba of the Hong local government area in Gongola. When a court ruled in favor of two contenders for local government chairmanships on the grounds of electoral irregularities, Isa Mohammed refused to recognise the decision and swear them in as chairmen. He filed an injunction against the Nigerian Bar Association when they boycotted the courts in protest, and later filed a lawsuit against ''Punch'' for the way it had reported the incident. Jonah David Jang
Air Commodore Jonah David Jang ( Retired, Rtd) CON (born 13 March 1944) is a Nigerian statesman who was the Governor of Plateau State from 2007 to 2015. He had previously served as Military Governor of Benue State and Gongola State He ran successfully for re-election on 26 April 2011. In 2015, Jang ran and won Plateau North senate seat as his term as Governor of Plateau State drew to a close. Yohanna Madaki
Barrister (Colonel) Yohanna Anteyan Madaki (1941–2006) was Governor of Gongola State and then of Benue State, Nigeria during the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida. Background Yohanna Madaki was born in 1941 in Ziturung Ka̠ryi, Zangon Kataf Local Government Area in Kaduna State. He attended the then St Paul's Primary School in Zonkwa Kaduna State and thereafter proceeded to the Nigerian Military School (NMS) Zaria. Upon completing the NMS program, he enlisted as a Private in the Nigerian Army and served in various Battalions before proceeding to the Mons Cadet Officer Academy at Aldershot England. Bamanga Tukur ( CON) (born 15 September 1935) is a Nigerian businessman and politician who served as Minister for Industries in the administration of General Sani Abacha during the 1990s. Great Nigeria Peoples Party
The Great Nigeria People's Party was one of the six major political parties that fielded candidates for elections in the Nigerian Second Republic. The party was formed by a splinter group from the Nigerian People's Party, the group was led by Waziri Ibrahim, a politician and businessman from Borno. Waziri was one of the leaders of the three associations that formed the nucleus of NPP. The original intention of NPP was to transcend the politics of ethnicity and to promote the cause of both the prominent ethnic groups and ethnic minorities. However, the entry of Nnamdi Azikiwe to NPP led to a power struggle in which Waziri lost. Waziri then led a group of minorities in the north and some southerners to form the Great Nigeria Peoples Party. North-Eastern State
North-Eastern State is a former administrative division of Nigeria. It was created on 27 May 1967 from parts of the Northern Region. Its capital was the city of Maiduguri. Abubakar Barde
Alhaji Abubakar Barde (1938 - 17 June 2002) was Governor of Gongola State, Nigeria between October 1979 and September 1983 during the Nigerian Second Republic. Barde was of Mumuye origin. He was elected governor on the platform of the Great Nigeria Peoples Party (GNPP), holding office from 1979 to September 1983. He inherited a backward and ethnically divided state, but did little to improve the situation. Many projects started by the previous regime were abandoned. He did initiate a project to establish the Gongola Television Corporation (now the Adamawa Television Corporation) in 1982, but this was abandoned when the military took power in December 1983.
