Hans Von Aachen
Hans von Aachen (1552 – 4 March 1615) was a German painter who was one of the leading representatives of Northern Mannerism. Hans von Aachen was a versatile and productive artist who worked in many genres. He was successful as a painter of princely and aristocratic portraits, and further painted religious, mythological and allegorical subjects. Known for his skill in the depiction of nudes, his eroticized mythological scenes were particularly enjoyed by his principal patron, Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor, Emperor Rudolf II. These remain the works for which he is best known. He also painted a number of genre paintings of small groups of figures shown from the chest upwards, laughing, often apparently using himself and his wife as models. Luitpold Adam
Luitpold Adam (1888–1950) was a German painter. Adam was an official war artist during the First World War; and he was chosen by Adolf Hitler to be the head of the Nazi war artist program in the Second World War. Jakob Alt
Jakob Alt (27 September 1789 – 30 September 1872) was a German painter and lithographer. Life Alt was the son of Barbara Alt, née Horst, and Frankfurt carpenter Johann Leonhart Alt. He was born at Frankfurt am Main in 1789, where he received his early artistic education. Later he moved to Vienna and entered the Academy. He soon became noted as a landscape painter and made various journeys throughout Austria and Italy, painting, as he went along, views in the neighborhood of the Danube and in the city of Vienna. In later life Alt painted a lot in watercolor; he was also a lithographer. In 1830 the future Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria began a project to commission paintings of the most beautiful views in the Empire. Alt, and his eldest son, Rudolf von Alt painted about 170 of the 300 works executed before the scheme came to an end in 1849. Alt's extensive herbarium is now in the Lower Austrian State Museum . Christian Wilhelm Allers
Christian Wilhelm Allers (6 August 1857 – 19 October 1915) was a German painter and printmaker. Biography Allers, the son of a merchant, was born in Hamburg. He first worked as a lithographer, and in 1877 he moved to Karlsruhe where he continued to work as a lithographer. In the Kunstakademie (state academy of fine arts) he was a scholar of Prof. Ferdinand Keller. From 1880–81 he served in the German navy in Kiel where Anton Alexander von Werner supported him. In Kiel he got to know Klaus Groth, who became a friend of his. Allers became well known when he published his collection of prints "Club Eintracht" in 1888. Several other books and maps (collections of prints) followed, by way of example Bismarck, so at the beginning of the 1890s he was able to build a villa on Capri. William Alexander (artist)
William Alexander (born Wilhelm Alexander; 2 April 1915 – 24 January 1997), known as Bill Alexander on his TV show, was a German painter, art instructor, and television host. He was the creator and host of '' The Magic of Oil Painting'' (1974–1982) television series that ran on PBS in the United States. He co-wrote ''The Art of Bill Alexander and …'' (1987–1995), a series of books on wet-on-wet oil painting, based on different PBS series of the same form. He also taught the television painter Bob Ross his signature "quick" wet-on-wet technique. Life Wilhelm Alexander was born in East Prussia. His family fled to Berlin during World War I. Apprenticed as a carriage maker, Alexander was drafted into the Wehrmacht during World War II. Captured by Allied troops, he painted portraits of Allied officers' wives and he soon made his way to the United States. After World War II, Alexander was a refugee and became a professional painter. Heinrich Jacob Aldenrath
Heinrich Jakob Aldenrath (17 February 1775, Lübeck – 25 February 1844, Hamburg) was a portrait painter, miniaturist, and lithographer. Life Aldenrath was a pupil of Johann Jakob Tischbein and of Friedrich Carl Gröger, with whom he developed a friendship which lasted until Gröger's death in 1838. Together they attended the academies of Berlin, Dresden, and Paris. After periods in Lübeck, Kiel, and Copenhagen, they finally settled at Hamburg in 1814, and became celebrated as portrait painters. Aldenrath died in Hamburg in 1844. It is said that he painted the portrait of the King of Denmark no less than thirteen times. His lithographs include portraits of Friedrich Karl Gröger, the poets Klopstock and Count Stolberg, Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge, and his own self-portrait. Josef Albers
Josef Albers ( , , ; March 19, 1888March 25, 1976) was a German-born American artist and Visual arts education, educator who is considered one of the most influential 20th-century art teachers in the United States. Born in 1888 in Bottrop, Westphalia, Germany, into a Roman Catholic family with a background in craftsmanship, Albers received practical training in diverse skills like engraving glass, plumbing, and wiring during his childhood. He later worked as a schoolteacher from 1908 to 1913 and received his first public commission in 1918 and moved to Munich in 1919. In 1920, Albers joined the Weimar Bauhaus as a student and became a faculty member in 1922, teaching the principles of handicrafts. With the Bauhaus's move to Dessau in 1925, he was promoted to professor and married Anni Albers, a student at the institution and a Textile arts, textile artist. Max Ainmiller
Maximilian Emanuel Ainmiller (14 February 1807, Munich – 9 December 1870) was a German artist and glass painter. Under the tutorage of Friedrich von Gärtner, director of the royal Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory, Ainmiller studied glass painting, both as a mechanical process and as an art, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In 1828 he was appointed director of the newly founded royal painted-glass manufactory at Munich. The method which he gradually perfected there was a development of the enamel process adopted in the Renaissance, and consisted in actually painting the design upon the glass, which was subjected, as each colour was laid on, to carefully adjusted heating. The earliest specimens of Ainmiller's work are to be found in the cathedral of Regensburg. With a few exceptions, all the windows in Glasgow cathedral are from his hand. Wolfram Aichele
Wolfram Aïchele (29 April 1924 – 9 June 2016) was an artist from Baden-Württemberg in Southern Germany. Son of the animal artist Erwin Aichele, Aïchele's Third Reich childhood is the subject of a 2011 book by the author and historian Giles Milton, who is also his son-in-law. Aïchele's work has been the subject of a number of critical studies''Le dessin, le pastel, l'aquarelle dans l'Art Contemporain'', Editions Mayer. Paris, 1987. Life Aïchele's childhood was spent in the artists' colony of Eutingen, near Pforzheim in Baden-Württemberg. At the age of 17, Aïchele decided to train as a sculptor and was accepted on a four-year woodcarving course at the Bavarian State Woodcarving School in Oberammergau. Erwin Aichele
Erwin Aichele (5 May 1887 – 29 June 1974) was a German painter and animal artist from Baden-Württemberg in Southern Germany. His life and work was the subject of a 1988 monograph, ''Der Tiermaler Erwin Aichele'' by Hans Schöner. Early years Erwin Aichele studied fine art at the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe. He continued his studies in the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, where he was taught by the celebrated animal artist Heinrich von Zügel. In 1911, Aichele passed his art teaching diploma and started work at the jewelry school in Pforzheim, Southern Germany. War years In 1915, Aichele joined the army and was sent to France as part of a communications team. His talent in draughtsmanship came to the notice of his commanding officer and he was given the official function of war artist. August Ahlborn
August Wilhelm Julius Ahlborn (October 11, 1796 – August 24, 1857) was a German landscape art, landscape painter. Life Ahlborn was born in Hanover, son of the Hanoverian master tailor Heinrich Christian Ahlborn and Dorothea Elisabeth Röllecke. He entered the Prussian Academy of Arts (Berlin) in 1819, where he studied with Karl Wilhelm Wach. In 1826 he received the Academy Award for a portrait of the New Palace in Potsdam and used the money to travel to Italy in 1827, where he was one of the founders of the Roman Kunstverein. In this period, he lived in Rome, Florence, and Ascoli. In December 1832, he married Therese, the daughter of a government official, in Berlin. In 1833 he became a member of the Prussian Academy. In Italy, Ahlborn and his wife converted to Roman Catholicism from Lutheranism, on August 15, 1837. Karl Agricola
Karl Joseph Aloys Agricola (18 October 1779 – 15 May 1852) was a German artist, noted for his portrait miniatures. Life and works Agricola was born at Bad Säckingen, Margraviate of Baden, in 1779.
