Gaming Convention
A gaming convention is a gathering centered on role-playing games, collectible card games, miniatures wargames, board games, video games, or other types of games. These conventions are typically two or three business days long, and often held at either a university or in a convention center hotel. The largest gaming convention, Spiel, is a trade fair held in Essen, Germany that focuses on German-style board games and RPGs. A similarly large event is '' Festival Ludique International de Parthenay'' (FLIP), a games festival held over twelve days in France. The annual Gamescom in Cologne is the world's leading expo for video games. While games are often a large part of science fiction conventions and other hobby conventions, gaming conventions are distinguished by focusing on games and game-industry guests. Ziggurat Con
Ziggurat Con was a role-playing convention held on June 10, 2007. It was remarkable for being the only known role-playing video game convention held in a war zone. The con was held on the grounds of the Ali Airbase and Camp Adder in Iraq, both housing large numbers of North American Armed Forces personnel. It was named after a ziggurat from the ancient city of Ur that is on the base grounds. Admission was free to all U.S.-allied military personnel and civilian contractors posted in Iraq. History Ziggurat Con was as a soldier-run event. The convention was organized by active duty military service personnel deployed to Iraq by the United States Armed Forces, and by contractors to the United States government. Philippine Game Festival
The Philippine Game Festival, commonly known as PGF, is an annual video game convention held in Manila, the Philippines since 2009. It is usually held in October or November and is organized by the Game Developers Association of the Philippines, the local trade association for the game industry. The gaming convention is the largest gathering of game enthusiasts, designers, and developers in the entire local game development industry. Wellycon
Wellycon is the largest board game convention in New Zealand. The Wellycon Convention is held annually in Wellington, New Zealand on the Saturday and Sunday of Kings Birthday Weekend. The first Wellycon was held in 2008, with numbers steadily increasing (except when covid-restricted) e.g. 2018 at Wellington Girls' College, with over 600 attendees. The focus of the con is on having space and time to play games onsite, in contrast to many sci-fi/fantasy or board game trade fairs such as Spiel (the largest board game convention in the world). The totally volunteer-run committee works hard to fulfil the tag-line "the biggest, fun, friendly board game convention in NZ" with over 150 volunteers facilitating at the event.
