Brian Bowman
Brian Leslie Bowman (born July 22, 1946) is an American virtuoso euphonium artist and music professor who, among other things, held the principal euphonium chair and was a featured soloist with the premier concert bands of the United States Navy Band, United States Navy and United States Air Force Band, Air Force. On March 28, 1976, Bowman performed the first euphonium recital at Carnegie Hall. Early life and education Bowman was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He earned a bachelor of music degree (June 1970) and master of music degree (August 1970) from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Ann Arbor. He earned a doctor of musical arts from the Catholic University of America School of Music (1975). Career Bowman served as a member of three United States military bands, two of which were premier ensembles for their respective services. Simone Mantia
Simone Mantia (6 February 1873 – 25 June 1951) was an American baritone horn/euphonium virtuoso and also trombone artist at the turn of the twentieth century. He was both a performer and administrator with many American band and orchestral ensembles. On baritone/euphonium he is often cited as the master of the instrument in his time. Life Simone Mantia was born on 6 February 1873 in Sciacca, Italy. Kiane Zawadi
Bernard Atwell McKinney, later Kiane Zawadi (November 26, 1932 – May 21, 2024) was an American jazz trombonist and euphonium player, one of the few jazz soloists on the latter instrument. Biography McKinney was born into a family of ten children, several of whom also became musicians. He is the uncle of R&B producer and jazz pianist Carlos "Los Da Mystro" McKinney. He first worked with Barry Harris and Sonny Stitt in 1951, and played with Alvin Jackson's band early in the decade. Toward the middle of the 1950s he was with Art Blakey, and he moved with Yusef Lateef to New York City in 1959. In the 1960s he played with Illinois Jacquet, James Moody, and Curtis Fuller. Later that decade he adopted the name Kiane Zawadi. In the 1970s he performed with Archie Shepp, Carlos Garnett, Harold Vick, Frank Foster, Charles Tolliver, Abdullah Ibrahim, and McCoy Tyner. Ophicleide
The ophicleide ( ) is a family of conical-bore keyed brass instruments invented in early 19th-century France to extend the keyed bugle into the lower range. Of these, the bass ophicleide in eight-foot (8′) C or 9′ B took root over the course of the 19th century in military bands and as the bass of orchestral brass sections throughout Western Europe, replacing the serpent and its later upright derivatives. By the end of the 19th century, however, it had been largely superseded, in bands by the euphonium and in orchestras by early forms of the modern tuba, some developed from valved ophicleides. The late 20th century saw a revival of interest in the instrument for historically informed performance practice, and ophicleides are built by a small number of manufacturers. Alfred James Phasey (19 February 1834 – 18 August 1888) was a British bandsman and tenor brass artist in the mid-nineteenth century. As a euphonium player, he was cited as the master of the instrument in his time. Life Alfred J. Toru Miura
is a Japanese euphonium player and professor at Kunitachi College of Music. He is a founding member of the International Tuba Euphonium Association (ITEA), formerly named Tubist Universal Brotherhood Association (TUBA). Education Miura studied with Kiyoshi Ohishi at the Conservatory of Music of Tokyo University of the Arts, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1971. He completed a masters in 1973, studying with Ray Young at the University of Southern Mississippi. This was followed by studies at the Eastman School of Music in New York, where he played in the Eastman Wind Ensemble under Donald Hunsberger, and also studied with Cherry Beauregard. The Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) is a conservatoire located in Manchester, England. It is one of four conservatoires associated with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. In addition to being a centre of music education, RNCM is a busy and diverse public performance venue. History The RNCM has a history dating back to the 19th century and the establishment of the Royal Manchester College of Music (RMCM). Steven Mead (born 26 February 1962 in Bournemouth, England) is an English virtuoso euphonium soloist and teacher. Biography Mead has played an important role in achieving worldwide recognition of the instrument. The UWA Conservatorium of Music is a teaching and research school offering undergraduate and postgraduate study in music at the University of Western Australia.
