Latta Arcade
The Latta Arcade is an indoor shopping arcade located at 320 S. Tryon St. in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. It was built in 1914 to include a two floor atrium with stores and restaurants. There is a glass skylight over the atrium, which was originally used to allow natural light for grading cotton. It was designed by architect William H. Peeps. Marcelino Manuel Da Graça
Marcelino Manuel da Graça (January 25, 1881 or 1884—January 12, 1960), better known as Charles Manuel "Sweet Daddy" Grace, or Daddy Grace, was the founder and first bishop of the predominantly African-American denomination, the United House of Prayer For All People. He was a contemporary of other religious leaders such as Father Divine, Noble Drew Ali, and Ernest Holmes. Many of his followers claimed miraculous acts of faith healing while attending services and others saw his ministry as a sign from God of the imminent return of Jesus Christ. Derita (Charlotte Neighborhood)
Derita is a neighborhood of Charlotte, North Carolina and is located several miles north of Charlotte. The neighborhood is bordered by I-77 to the west, I-85 to the east, and WT Harris Blvd to the north. Its business district is centered along West Sugar Creek Rd. Derita is located in almost the exact center of Mecklenburg County. History The community became established 1860. Before that point, Derita was made up of large family farms carved from the forests and fields where the Sugaree Indians had made flint arrowheads and hunted for wild game. The first post office was established in 1882 with Amos L. Rumple as postmaster. The village was named after Derita Lewis, a friend of Mr. Rumple. The district encompasses seven contributing buildings and one contributing structure in the crossroads community of Croft in rural Mecklenburg County. Contributing resources include the S. W. & C. S. Bonnie Ethel Cone
Bonnie Ethel Cone (June 22, 1907 – March 8, 2003) was an American educator best known as the founder of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Cone was born to a prominent family in Lodge, South Carolina where her father served as Mayor. She earned her B.A. from Coker College and an M.A. in mathematics from Duke University. Cone was one of many mathematicians and scientists chosen to assist with the Manhattan Project during WWII. Cone was a teacher at Central High School in Charlotte (now Garinger High School), when the University of North Carolina system opened an extension center in 1946. At the urging of principal Elmer Garinger, Cone became the center's first director. When the state began closing the extension centers in 1949, Cone was instrumental in convincing the state to keep the Charlotte Center open, clearing the way for the Charlotte City Schools to take it over and rename it Charlotte College, a two-year junior college with Cone as president. University City (sometimes University Area or U-City) is an edge city mostly within the city limits of Charlotte, North Carolina, United States, surrounding the University of North Carolina at Charlotte campus. It is found in northeastern Mecklenburg County, southeast of Interstate 85 and predominantly along University City Boulevard ( NC 49) and W.T. Harris Boulevard ( NC 24). Interstate 485 and US 29 (N. The Sherwood Forest neighborhood of Charlotte, North Carolina was established in the 1950s. In addition to the Sherwood Forest subdivision, the area also includes the Castleton Gardens and Charlestowne Manor subdivisions.
