Roman Catholicism In Chile
The Catholic Church in Chile is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope, the curia in Rome, and the Episcopal Conference of Chile. The Church is composed of 5 archdioceses, 18 dioceses, 2 territorial prelatures, 1 apostolic vicariate, 1 military ordinariate and a personal prelature (Opus Dei). The government observes the following Catholic Holy Days as national holidays (if on a week day): Good Friday, Christmas, Feast of the Virgin of Carmen, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, the Feast of the Assumption, and All Saints Day. The Iglesia de La Matriz del Salvador (The Matriz Church of the Saviour) is a church in the city of Valparaíso, Chile. Located in the heart of the port district (Barrio Puerto) of the city, surrounded by cobblestone streets and houses it has a historical importance in the city and was declared a National Monument of Chile in 1971. History Origins In 1559, the Bishop of Santiago, Rodrigo Marmolejo, founded the first temple in Valparaiso, a small chapel that was really little more than a hut. From this point as the settlement grew a series of successive religious congregations: Augustinian (1627), Franciscan (1664), Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy (1715), Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (1834) and Jesuits (1850) used the church. The Churches of Chiloé in Chile's Chiloé Archipelago are a unique architectural phenomenon in the Americas and one of the most prominent styles of Chilota architecture. Unlike classical Spanish colonial architecture, the churches of Chiloé are made entirely in native timber with extensive use of wood shingles. The churches were built from materials to resist the Chiloé Archipelago's humid and rainy oceanic climate. Built in the 18th and 19th centuries when Chiloé Archipelago was still a part of the Spanish Crown possessions, the churches represent the fusion of Spanish Jesuit culture and local native population's skill and traditions; an excellent example of mestizo culture. Santo Domingo Church, Santiago De Chile
The Santo Domingo Church (Spanish: ''Iglesia de Santo Domingo'') is a Dominican church in the historical downtown of Santiago de Chile. It is located at the corner of Santo Domingo Street and 21 de Mayo Street. History The present structure is the fourth church built on the same site to house the Dominican congregation in Santiago. Earthquakes in 1595, 1647, and 1730 destroyed the early churches. The fourth church began to be constructed in 1747 under the design of architect Juan de los Santos Vasconcellos. Joaquín Toesca worked on its construction between 1795 and 1796. The church has suffered two important fires. The first occurred in 1895 and the second fire occurred in 1963, which destroyed the interior of the church. Architecture The main body of the church is built in ashlar masonry. San Francisco Church, Santiago De Chile
The San Francisco Church (Spanish: ''Iglesia de San Francisco'') is a Franciscan church on Avenida Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins, in the downtown of Santiago de Chile. The church, along with the adjacent convent, is one of the oldest colonial-era buildings in the country. It has been resistant to about 15 earthquakes of magnitude over 7. History The church was consecrated in 1622. The first bell tower was destroyed by an earthquake in 1647 and its collapse caused damage in a part of the choir. The rest of the building successfully resisted it. In 1730 another earthquake badly damaged the rebuilt tower, which was demolished in 1751. The current bell tower is of Victorian architecture and was constructed in the mid-1800s. Its architect was Fermín Vivaceta and features a distinctive clock. Parroquia de Santa Filomena (Parish of Santa Filomena) is a church located in the Patronato District of the Recoleta Municipality in the city of Santiago, Chile. This church is named after Santa Filomena, a saint and a martyr. The Santa Filomena Church was built in 1884 by the architect Eugenio Joannon and under the supervision of Ruperto Marchant, a priest. This church is the result of the war against the Indians volunteer and non profit organizations that followed the ''Rerum novarum'' encyclical published by Pope Leo XII. The church follows a Neo-Gothic style. The inside is decorated with paintings that emulate materials such as stone and marble. A chiaroscuro effect is obtained with the glass paintings that were brought directly from France. Iglesia de San Agustín — Our Lady of Grace, commonly known as Church of St Augustine or Templo de San Agustín, is owned by the Order of Saint Augustine. It is a Catholic church, located at the southeast corner of Agustinas and Estado streets, in downtown Santiago, Chile. History Built in 1625, Iglesia de San Agustín is the second oldest church in Chile after Saint Francis of Assisi's church. The Order of Saint Augustine in Chile was established within this church and monastery. The first church was built in 1608, but has been since rebuilt. The Iglesia de la Divina Providencia (English: ''Church of the Divine Providence'') is a church managed by the Sisters of Providence, in Santiago, Chile. It gives its name to the district of Providencia and also to Avenida Providencia. The church was originally declared as a National Monument in 1975, but this designation was revoked and again designated as a national monument in 1989. History In 1854, the land where the church stands was acquired to build an orphan asylum for the purpose of replacing the old asylum located on the current Huérfanos Street. Its operation was given to the Sisters of Providence by the then minister Antonio Varas.Several years later, Domingo Santa María approved the construction of a church for the orphanage.
