List Of Australian Floral Emblems
This is a list of Australian floral emblems. It encompasses the national flower and the official flowers of the constituent states. History After the Federation of Australia that took place in 1901, the upsurge in nationalism led to the search for an official national floral emblem. Archibald James Campbell's, Archibald Campbell had founded the Wattle Club in Victoria in 1899 to promote interest in and profile of the wattle as a unique Australian flower. The New South Wales waratah was considered alongside the wattle ''Acacia pycnantha'', although lost out to the latter in 1912. The economist and botanist Richard Thomas Baker, R. T. Baker proposed that the waratah's endemism to the Australian continent made it a better choice than the wattle, as well as the prominence of its flowers. Cooktown is a coastal town and locality in the Shire of Cook, Queensland, Australia. Sturt's Desert Rose
''Gossypium sturtianum'', or Sturt's desert rose, is a woody shrub, closely related to cultivated cotton, found in most mainland states of Australia and the Northern Territory. It is also known as the Darling River rose, cotton rosebush and Australian cotton. The plant has a life span of about 10 years, growing from 1–2 m tall and 1–2 m wide. The flowers are up to 12 cm in diameter: they can be seen for most of the year but peak in late winter. The colour of the petals ranges from pale pink to dark purple to maroon. The five petals are arranged in a whorl and have a dark red centre. The leaves are different shades of green, round and strongly scented when crushed. ''Telopea speciosissima'', commonly known as the New South Wales waratah or simply waratah, is a large shrub in the plant family Proteaceae. It is Endemism, endemic to New South Wales in Australia. No subspecies are recognised; the closely related ''Telopea aspera'' was classified as a separate species in 1995. ''T. speciosissima'' is a shrub to high and wide, with dark green leaves. Its several stems arise from a pronounced woody base known as a lignotuber.
