Lipps Inc.
Lipps, Inc. ( , a pun on the phrase "lip sync") was an American disco and funk group from Minneapolis, Minnesota. The group is best known for the chart-topping 1980 worldwide hit single " Funkytown", which hit No. 1 in 28 countries and was certified as double platinum in sales. The group originally consisted of lead vocalist Cynthia Johnson and a changing line-up of session musicians, including guitarist David Rivkin, guitarist Tom Riopelle and bassist Terry Grant. Steven Greenberg, the creator of the act, wrote and produced most of the group's music. History Lipps Inc. started as a project of Steven Greenberg when he was a wedding DJ who wanted to try his hand at writing disco songs. He had intended to use the name Lip Sync, but it was in use by another group, so instead he chose the homophone Lipps Inc. ''TopPop'' was a Dutch television programme. It was the first regular dedicated pop music television series in the Dutch language area. The Netherlands broadcaster AVRO aired the programme weekly from 22 September 1970 to 27 June 1988. Presenter Ad Visser hosted for its first fifteen years. The creator and original director of ''TopPop'' was Rien van Wijk. Doris D (born Debbie Jenner; 22 February 1959) is a British singer and dancer who spent her career in the Netherlands. Biography Jenner was born in Skegness, England, and settled in the Netherlands at the age of 20 to start a ballet school there. There, she was a featured dancer in the Dutch pop music television program ''TopPop'', and she worked with the girl group Babe. In 1980, she was asked to become the face of the studio band Lipps Inc. in the Netherlands, which had a big hit with "Funkytown". In spring 1980, the record also reached the number 1 position in the Netherlands on the then-three hit lists on the Dutch public radio station Hilversum 3: the Dutch Top 40, the National Hitparade and the TROS Top 50. ''Designer Music'' is the third album by American disco act Lipps, Inc., and the last featuring Cynthia Johnson on lead vocals. It was released in 1981 on Casablanca Records. Ace (band)
Ace were a British rock band who enjoyed moderate success in the 1970s. Their members included Paul Carrack, who later became famous as a vocalist for Mike + The Mechanics and as a solo artist. Ace were perhaps best known for their hit single " How Long", which was a top 20 single in the United Kingdom in 1974, and reached no. 3 in the United States and Canada in 1975. Career The band formed in December 1972 in Sheffield as "Ace Flash and the Dynamos", but soon shortened the name to "Ace". The members were assembled from various professional bands. "How Long" is the debut single by the English band Ace, from their 1974 debut album, '' Five-A-Side''. It reached No. 3 on both the US and Canadian charts, and No. 20 on the UK Singles Chart. In a 1981 issue of ''Smash Hits'', Phil Collins named the song as one of his top 10 favourites, describing it as a "classic single". Background Although widely interpreted as being about infidelity, the song was in fact composed by lead singer Paul Carrack upon discovering that bassist Terry "Tex" Comer had been secretly working with the Sutherland Brothers and Quiver.
