Linnich
Linnich is a town in the district of Düren in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located on the River Rur (Roer river), approx. 10 km north-west of Jülich. Economy Linnich is the home of SIG Combibloc, the specialist for aseptic carton packaging. On the same Industrial site Gascogne Laminates Germany is producing laminates packaging for the pharmaceutical industry. Town twinnings Since 1974, Linnich is twinned with the French town of Lesquin in the Nord département. Transportation Linnich has no direct connections to German Autobahns, but the exits Erkelenz-Süd of the BAB 46, Titz, Jülich-Ost or Aldenhoven of the BAB 44 can be used. Linnich is connected to the Rurtalbahn since 2002, and has one station near the SIG-factory and one in the suburb Tetz. Tetz
Tetz is the second-largest district in the city of Linnich, Düren district, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. History Originally Tetz was a Romano - Celtic settlement. The name is attributed to a "Deciacum", a "Good Roman." Through different linguistic transformations, that name became Titzich, then Titze, and finally Tetz. Between the villages of Boslar and Tetz, remains of a former Roman manor were found. In the Middle Ages, Tetz first belonged to the Counts of Jülich. After several ownership changes, Tetz finally came into the possession of the Lords of Brachel. The last owner of the castle, Baron Maximilian Freiherr von Brachel, died in 1964. Tetz once had a church, the holy Consecrated Lambertus, that dated to 1291. It was destroyed by German soldiers in WW2 before their withdrawal and the occupation by American troops. Düren (district)
Düren () is a Kreis (district) in the west of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Neighboring districts are Heinsberg, Neuss, Rhein-Erft-Kreis, Euskirchen and Aachen. History The district was created in 1972 by merging the former districts of Jülich and Düren. Both districts date back to 1816 when the new Prussian province Rhineland was created. Before the Napoleonic Wars all of the area belonged to the duchy of Jülich. Geography Geographically it covers both the lowlands of the Lower Rhine Bay as well as the mountains and hills of the Eifel. The district has rich lignite (brown coal) deposits, which is used in open pit mining. Another big industry is paper production, which dates back to the second part of the 16th century. Rurtalbahn
Rurtalbahn (German for "Rur Valley Railway") is a railway company servicing the Rur valley from Linnich to Heimbach. Its major hub is Düren station, from where two train lines run to the two destinations. Rurtalbahn GmbH is owned by R.A.T.H GmbH (74.9%) and Dürener Kreisbahn (25.1%). It was outsourced from Dürener Kreisbahn in 2003, who had formerly promoted their railway network as Rurtalbahn. Dürener Kreisbahn had operated the two train lines since 1993 (however with the line to Linnich being shorter - trains only went to Jülich). On weekends, Rurtalbahn runs several tourist trains in the Eifel area such as the BördeExpress. River Rur
The Roer (, ) or Rur (; ) is a major river that flows through portions of Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. It is a right (eastern) tributary to the Meuse (). About 90 percent of the river's course is in Germany. It is not to be confused with the rivers Ruhr and Röhr, which are tributaries of the Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia. Elke Winkens, née Fischer (born 25 March 1970) is an Austrian-German actress. She grew up in Germany in the district Ratheim in Hückelhoven. Because of her father's work the family moved to The Netherlands and Belgium; for some time she also resided in Africa.
