The Iowa Senate is the upper house of the Iowa General Assembly. There are 50 seats in the Iowa Senate, representing 50 single-member districts across the Iowa, state of Iowa with populations of approximately 60,927 per constituency, . Each Senate district is composed of two House districts. The Senate meets at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines, Iowa, Des Moines. Unlike the lower house, the Iowa House of Representatives, senators serve four-year terms, with no Term limits in the United States, term limits. Terms are staggered so that half the Senate is up for reelection every two years. Leadership The President of the Senate presides over the body, whose powers include referring bills to committees, recognizing members during debate, and making procedural rulings. Mary Lou Freeman
Mary Lou Freeman ( Hawkinson; October 21, 1941 – September 4, 2006) was an American politician who served as a member of the Iowa House of Representatives and the Iowa State Senate. Early life and career Born in Kandiyohi, Minnesota, Freeman, a Republican, was elected twice to the Iowa State Senate from the 5th District serving from 1995 to 2003, and was then elected to two terms in the Iowa State House from the 52nd district, serving from 2003 until her death in 2006. Education Freeman graduated from Willmar High School and later obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from Gustavus Adolphus College. Cherokee is a city and the county seat of in Cherokee County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,199 at the 2020 Census, down from 5,369 in 2000. History Cherokee was laid out as a town in 1870, and was named for the Southeast Indian tribe, most of whose members had been removed to Indian Territory in the late 1830s. Aurelia is a city in Cherokee County, Iowa, United States. The population was 968 at the 2020 census. History Aurelia was founded in 1873 as a stop along the Illinois Central Railroad branch connecting Sioux City, Iowa, to Chicago, Illinois. This was the only railroad connecting the two Midwestern hubs and so gave birth to many railroad towns. Aurelia was named for the youngest daughter of the owner of the railroad, John Insley Blair, who died in 1866. The location of Aurelia was only set after a last minute change in the railroad design that saw it redirect to go through LeMars and Cherokee, rather than connect Sioux City directly to Storm Lake.
