Ling (bell)
(), also known as clapper-bells, are a form of bell found in Neolithic and Bronze Age archaeological sites in China. They consist of a hollow bell body and a clapper dangled inside, which produces sound as it strikes the internal rim of the bell. Initially made from ceramic by the Yangshao culture () and neighboring cultures in northern China, copper were produced by the end of the Longshan culture, with one example recovered from the site of Taosi in Shanxi. Both ceramic and bronze have been found at the Bronze Age site of Erlitou, where they were used as a grave good. Although relatively scarce from around 1500 to 1200 BCE, they reemerge during the Late Shang (1250–1046). Late Shang bronze are commonly found around the necks of animals buried as death attendants, especially dogs, although some examples have been found attached to elephants, cows, and a monkey. Shijiahe Culture
The Shijiahe culture (2500–2000 BC) was a Late Neolithic culture centered on the middle Yangtze River region in Shijiahe Town, Tianmen, Hubei Province, China. It succeeded the Qujialing culture in the same region and inherited its unique artefact of painted spindle whorls. Pottery figurines and distinct jade worked with advanced techniques were also common to the culture. Overview The culture is named after its type site, the Shijiahe site cluster, in Tianmen, Hubei, in the Middle Yangtze Valley. The lower layer of the site belonged to the Qujialing culture. The city site is said to be a "nearly perfect square" of in area and was densely populated. It may have housed from between 15,000 and 50,000 inhabitants within the settlement's walls. At Dengjiawan, within the Shijiahe site cluster, some pieces of copper were discovered, making these the earliest copper objects discovered so far in southern China.
