Djavan
Djavan Caetano Viana (; born 27 January 1949) is a Brazilian singer-songwriter and guitarist. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest singers in Brazilian history. Early life and career Djavan was born in Maceió, Brazil to a white father of Dutch descent and a black mother. He later formed the group Luz, Som, Dimensão (LSD – "Light, Sound, Dimension"), playing Beatles' material. In 1973, Djavan moved to Rio de Janeiro and started singing soap opera soundtracks. His first album, ''A Voz, o Violão e a Arte de Djavan'', was recorded in 1976 and included the hit song "Flor de Lis". Stevie Wonder was a guest on the album '' Luz''. In 1999, his album ''Ao Vivo'' sold 1.2 million copies. In 2016, he was nominated for the 2016 Latin Grammy Awards in the Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Portuguese Language Song and Best Singer-Songwriter Album categories. ''Luz'' ("Light" in English) is the fifth studio album by Brazilian singer and songwriter Djavan, released on August 20, 1982, by CBS Records. Stevie Wonder is featured on the song "Samurai". Background In the early 1980s, American record producer Quincy Jones bought the publishing rights to some of Djavan's music, among other Brazilian musicians. In 1982, Djavan was invited to the United States by CBS Records (now Sony Music) to record an album for an American audience. There, he was introduced to producer Ronnie Foster and musician Stevie Wonder, the latter of whom recorded "Samurai" with him in Los Angeles. Although the album did not sell exceptionally well in the U.S., it had sold 500,000 copies in Brazil by the fall of 1984. Critical reception Alvaro Neder, writing for ''AllMusic'', gave the album four out of five stars. Recorded in Los Angeles, California, and co-produced by Ronnie Foster with Djavan, it was sold in Brazil, the United States, Japan, and some European countries. Songwriter
A songwriter is a person who creates musical compositions or writes lyrics for songs, or both. The writer of the music for a song can be called a composer, although this term tends to be used mainly in the classical music genre and film scoring. A songwriter who mainly writes the lyrics for a song is referred to as a lyricist. The pressure from the music industry to produce popular hits means that song writing is often an activity for which the tasks are distributed among a number of people.
