Lillian Helena Smith
Lillian Helena Smith (17 March 1887 — 5 January 1983) was the first British Empire children's librarian. Over the course of her career, Smith established library spaces and services for children within the Toronto Public Library, Toronto schools, and at the Hospital for Sick Children (Toronto), Hospital for Sick Children. She also helped to create a library classification system that was used for children’s collections at Toronto libraries until the late 1990s. The Lillian H. Smith Toronto Public Library branch, opened in 1995, is named after her. Early life and education On 17 March 1887, Smith was born in London, Ontario.
