Liliane Schnitzler
Liliane Schnitzler is a French dermatologist who described the eponymous Schnitzler's syndrome in 1972. Schnitzler's syndrome is a rare autoinflammatory disorder. The disorder was first called Schnitzler's syndrome in 1989. Schniztler was born on May 20, 1938. She worked closely with Robert Degos, another French dermatologist. Schnitzler was also a professor, teaching at the CHU Angers, a university hospital in Angers. She became the head of its dermatology department in 1970. She was the first woman to be an associate professor of dermatology at CHU Angers. Schnitzler had retired by 2013. Autoinflammatory Disorder
Periodic fever syndromes are a set of disorders characterized by recurrent episodes of systemic and organ-specific inflammation. Unlike autoimmune disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus, in which the disease is caused by abnormalities of the adaptive immune system, people with autoinflammatory diseases do not produce autoantibodies or antigen-specific T or B cells. Instead, the autoinflammatory diseases are characterized by errors in the innate immune system. The syndromes are diverse, but tend to cause episodes of fever, joint pains, skin rashes, abdominal pains and may lead to chronic complications such as amyloidosis. Most autoinflammatory diseases are genetic and present during childhood. The most common genetic autoinflammatory syndrome is familial Mediterranean fever, which causes short episodes of fever, abdominal pain, serositis, lasting less than 72 hours. Robert Degos
Robert Degos (1904–1987) was a French dermatologist who described several dermatoses including Degos disease which he first described in a seminal paper published in 1942 in the French journal of dermatology and syphilology. Life and work He became an " interne des Hopitaux de Paris" in 1926 and trained at the Hopital Broca before joining the Hopital Saint-Louis in 1931 in the Department of another renown dermatologist, Gaston Auguste Milian. But it is Henri Gougerot in whose department he worked and trained in 1933 as "chef de clinique" - and who ultimately became his mentor - who influenced his choice of specializing in dermatology. Degos became the "Chair in skin and syphilitic diseases" and chief of the first department of Dermatology at the Hopital Saint-Louis in 1951.
