Likiep Atoll
Likiep Atoll ( Marshallese: , ) is a coral atoll of 65 islands in the Pacific Ocean, and forms a legislative district of the Ratak Chain of the Marshall Islands. It is approximately northwest of Wotje. Its total land area is only , but that encloses a deep central lagoon of . Likiep Atoll also possesses the Marshall Islands' highest point, an unnamed knoll above sea level. The population of Likiep Atoll was 228 in 2021. History The first recorded sighting by Europeans was by the Spanish expedition of Ruy López de Villalobos in January 1543. On 5 January 1565, its sighting was again recorded by the patache ''San Lucas'', commanded by Alonso de Arellano, part of the Spanish expedition of Miguel López de Legazpi, which had by then separated from Legazpi's fleet. On 12 January 1565, it was Legazpi who arrived to Likiep Atoll and charted them as ''Los Corrales'' ("farmyards" in Spanish). Bucholz Army Airfield is a United States Army airfield located on Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands. Its position is ideal for refueling during trans-Pacific flights, and the airport is available to civilians through Air Marshall Islands and United Airlines. Wotje Airport is a public use airstrip located in the village of Wotje on Wotje Atoll, Marshall Islands. This airstrip is assigned the location identifier N36 by the FAA and WTE by the IATA. Facilities Wotje Airport is at an elevation of 4 feet (1.2 m) above mean sea level. The runway is designated 13/31 with a turf surface measuring 4,275 by 75 feet (1,303 x 23 m).
