Liisi Beckmann
Liisi Beckmann (7 December 1924 – 9 August 2004) was a Finnish designer and artist primarily active in Italy from the late 1950s to the late 1970s. Examples of her work are held in the collections of the Moderna Museet in Stockholm and the Design Museum in Helsinki. Her work has also been exhibited at the Rome Quadriennale, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and the Triennale Design Museum in Milan. Her most celebrated design was the Karelia chair, first produced by Zanotta in 1966. Life and career She was born Liisi Marjatta Meronen on her parents' farm in Kirvu on the Karelian Isthmus. The Meronen family was forced to evacuate when the Russians invaded and seized the territory at the outbreak of World War II. With their farm razed to the ground and unable to return to Karelia, the family built a new life in Virenoja, a village near Orimattila. Polyurethane Foam
Polyurethane products have many uses. Over three quarters of the global consumption of polyurethane products is in the form of foams, with flexible and rigid types being roughly equal in market size. In both cases, the foam is usually behind other materials: flexible foams are behind upholstery fabrics in commercial and domestic furniture; rigid foams are between metal, or plastic walls/sheets of most refrigerators and freezers, or other surface materials in the case of thermal insulation panels in the construction sector. Its use in garments is growing: for example, in lining the cups of brassieres. Polyurethane is also used for moldings which include door frames, columns, balusters, window headers, pediments, medallions and rosettes. The first magazine in Finland, a Swedish-language women's magazine named ''Om Konsten at rätt behaga'', was published in 1782. The number of the Finnish magazines was about 1,200 in the 1980s. In the 1990s, the circulation of magazines increased, being 5.4 million copies in 1990 and 6.2 million copies in 1999. The number of magazines was 2,819 in 2001. Magazines accounted for 18% of the Finnish press market in 2007. There were 3,300 magazines in 2008, half of which were trade and business magazines. ''Dwell'' is a design and technology brand. It was launched with a magazine in October 2000 to bridge the gap between design professionals and enthusiasts by CEO Lara Hedberg Deam with architecture and design critic Karrie Jacobs as its editor-in-chief. In August 2002, Jacobs left the magazine and was replaced by senior editor Allison Arieff. After Arieff, Sam Grawe held the position from 2006 to 2011, followed by Amanda Dameron from 2011 to 2017. William Hanley became the editor-in-chief in 2019. In January 2020, it was announced that Zach Klein would be taking over as Dwell's CEO. Founded in 1224, it is the oldest public non-sectarian university in the world, and is now organized into 26 departments.
