Lifesavas
Lifesavas is a hip hop group from Portland, Oregon. Their style exhibits tag-team rhymes, matter-of-fact storytelling and a soulful production. The emcee's styles and song writing skills are showcased in the arrangements of a funky collection of subject matter and concepts. Formation Vursatyl and Jumbo met playing basketball and ripping free-style in Portland city parks. Initially working on different projects out of the same makeshift studio, the two decided to join creative forces. DJ Rev Shines joined them, creating a trio. Chief Xcel from Blackalicious discovered the Lifesavas and invited the group to perform in San Francisco with Blackalicious Quannum Projects. Vursatyl was invited to perform backup vocals for Blackalicious during their live performances. Soon after, Jumbo and Shines joined Vursatyl on tour, opening for Quannum artists Blackalicious and Latyrx. Gutterfly
''Gutterfly: The Original Soundtrack'' is the second studio album by American hip hop group Lifesavas. It was released on April 24, 2007, through Quannum Projects with distribution via TVT Records. Recording sessions took place at The Promiseland in Portland, Accompong Compound in Oakland and Norwood's Crib in Venice Beach. Production was handled by members Jumbo the Garbageman, Rev. Shines and Vursatyl, as well as Jake One, Chief Xcel, Oh No and Vitamin D. It features guest appearances from Camp Lo, dead prez, Don Blackman, Fishbone, George Clinton, Ish, MegaNut, Smif-N-Wessun and Vernon Reid, and contributions from Ike Willis, David Walker and Chris Funk among others. Blackalicious
Blackalicious was an American hip-hop duo from Sacramento, California, made up of rapper Gift of Gab and DJ/producer Chief Xcel. Latyrx
Latyrx ( ) is an American alternative hip-hop duo composed of Lateef and Lyrics Born. The duo originated from the Solesides collective at the University of California, Davis. History The founding members of SoleSides, including DJ Shadow and the future Blackalicious’ team, were involved in student radio and shared a similar approach to hip-hop. Lateef and Lyrics Born were initially recorded as solo artists under the name Asia Born. Lyrics Born released the first single on the Solesides label, “Send Them,” in early 1993. DJ Shadow contributed production to four of the album’s tracks (1, 3, 12, 13). The release was noted for its unconventional production choices and the contrasting vocal styles of the two MCs.
