Liechtensteiner Americans () are Americans of Liechtensteiner descent. History The first recorded Liechtensteiner emigrants have immigrated to the United States in the early 1830s. However, the first great wave of Liechtensteiner emigrants arrived in the United States on April 7, 1851, settling in New Orleans; and in 1852 another group immigrated to Dubuque, Iowa (including stonemasons, bricklayers and carpenters). Eventually, many of the Liechtensteiner immigrants to Dubuque left that city and got farms nearby. However, the Liechtensteiner emigration was markedly reduced during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Later, when the construction of railroads began "tying the country together and opening up the West", other Liechtensteiners immigrated to the United States to work in the construction of railroads. Liechtenstein–United States Relations
The United States and Liechtenstein executed their first treaty in 1926. Diplomatic relations were established in 1997. Since then, the relations between the two nations have been stable. Representatives of both countries in 2002 signed a mutual legal assistance treaty focused largely on jointly combating money laundering and other illegal banking activities. The United States does not have an diplomatic mission, embassy in Liechtenstein, but the United States Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein, ambassador to Switzerland, located in Bern, is also accredited to Liechtenstein. As of August 12, 2022, the ambassador is Scott Miller (activist), Scott Miller. Liechtenstein, however, does have an embassy in the United States, located in Washington, D.C. Rainer Nägele (August 2, 1943 – May 12, 2022) was an American literary scholar whose research primarily focused on modern German and comparative literature. He was the author of several books, including ''Reading after Freud: Essays on Goethe, Hölderlin, Habermas, Nietzsche, Brecht, Celan, and Freud''. Nägele was the Alfred C. & Martha F. Mohr Professor Emeritus of German Language and Literature at Yale University. Life and career Nägele was born in Triesen, Liechtenstein. He completed his Abitur in St. Gallen, Switzerland, and Balzers, Liechtenstein. He studied at the University of Innsbruck (Austria) and the University of Göttingen and earned his Ph.D. in 1971 at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Guttenberg, Iowa
Guttenberg is a city in Clayton County, Iowa, United States, along the Mississippi River. The population was 1,817 at the time of the 2020 census, down from 1,987 at the 2000 census. History Prairie La Porte, meaning "the door to the prairie," was the first name given to Guttenberg by French explorers in 1673. The Guttenberg area was a site of Sauk and Meskwaki campgrounds until 1823. The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 transferred ownership to the United States and the Black Hawk Purchase of 1833 finally opened the area for legal settlement.
