He founded the religion of Thelema, identifying himself as the prophet entrusted with guiding humanity into the Aeon of Horus, Æon of Horus in the early 20th century. A prolific writer, he published widely over the course of his life. Born to a wealthy family in Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, Crowley rejected his parents' fundamentalist Christian Plymouth Brethren faith to pursue an interest in Western esotericism. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, Trinity College at the University of Cambridge, where he focused his attention upon mountaineering and poetry, resulting in several publications. The Blue Equinox
''The Blue Equinox'', officially known as ''The Equinox'' (Volume III, Number 1) is a book written by the English occultist Aleister Crowley, the founder of Thelema. First published in 1919, it details the principles and aims of the secret society O.T.O. and its ally the A∴A∴, both of which were under Crowley's control at the time. It includes such topics as ''The Law of Liberty'', The Gnostic Mass, and Crowley's "Hymn to Pan". Background In February 1904, Aleister Crowley and his wife Rose arrived in Cairo. Pretending to be a prince and princess, they rented an apartment in which Crowley set up a temple room and began invoking ancient Egyptian deities, while studying Islamic mysticism and Arabic. According to Crowley's later account, Rose regularly became delirious and informed him "they are waiting for you." On 18 March, she explained that "they" were the god Horus, and on 20 March proclaimed that "the Equinox of the Gods has come". She led him to a nearby museum, where she ...

The Vision And The Voice
''The Vision and the Voice'' (Liber 418) is a book by Aleister Crowley (1875–1947). It chronicles the mystical journey of the author as he explored the 30 Enochian aethyrs originally developed by John Dee and Edward Kelley in the 16th century. These visions took place at two times: in 1900 during his stay in Mexico, and later in 1909 in Algeria in the company of poet Victor Benjamin Neuburg. Of all his works, Crowley considered this book to be second in importance behind ''The Book of the Law'', the text that established his religious and philosophical system of Thelema in 1904. It was first published in 1911 in '' The Equinox'' (Volume I, Number 5) as a "Special Supplement". ''The Vision and the Voice'' is the source of many of the central spiritual doctrines of Thelema, especially in the visions of Babalon and her consort Chaos (the "All-Father"), as well as an account of how an individual might cross the Abyss, thereby assuming the title of "Master of the Temple" an ...

Eight Lectures On Yoga
''Eight Lectures on Yoga'' is a book by the English occultist Aleister Crowley about the practice of Yoga. The book is the fourth of volume 3 of ''The Equinox'', which was published by Ordo Templi Orientis. The work is largely a demystified look at yoga, using little to no jargon or satirical humour. It is in two sections each with four parts, which are transcripts of eight one-hour lectures on the subject given by Crowley. The book was originally published in 1939. Summary In ''Eight Lectures on Yoga'', Crowley instructs students on the steps needed to approach mysticism through yoga, and details the complications that arise along the path. One intent Crowley had in writing the book was to dispel the various myths surrounding Yoga in Europe at the time — most thought it to be an exotic, Eastern ritual of the ancient past. The first section, "Yoga for Yahoos", is in four lectures, in which Crowley successively: # Dissects the word "Yoga", as well as its various implicatio ...

Little Essays Toward Truth
''Little Essays Toward Truth'' is a 1938 book written by the mystic Aleister Crowley (1875–1947). It consists of sixteen philosophical essays on various topics within the framework of the Qabalah and Crowley's religion of Thelema. On the concept of truth, Crowley writes: :What then can be meant by the title of this compilation: ''Little Essays toward Truth''? Do we not all assume a perfectly illogical conception of Truth as an entity of "the supra-mundane order, whence a whirling flame and flying Light subsist?" Do we not instinctively assimilate these ideas of Truth and Light, though there is no rational nexus? Is it not clear, then, that we do understand each other perfectly, so far as we can understand each other at all, in a sphere such as Zoroaster calls "Intelligible," which "subsisteth beyond Mind' but which we should "seek to grasp with the Flower of Mind"? (p.84). The sixteen topics include: Man, Memory, Sorrow, Wonder, Beatitude, Laughter, Indifference, Mastery ...

Ordo Templi Orientis
Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.; ) is an occult secret society and hermetic magical organization founded at the beginning of the 20th century. The origins of O.T.O. can be traced back to the German-speaking occultists Carl Kellner, Theodor Reuss, Heinrich Klein, and Franz Hartmann. In its first incarnation, O.T.O. was intended to be modelled after and associated with European Freemasonry; as such, in its early years, only Freemasons could seek admittance. Founder and first head of the Order Carl Kellner wanted to create an Academia Masonica wherein various rites of high-degree Freemasonry could be conferred within German-speaking countries. During the course of his esoteric studies across the globe and from many traditions, Kellner believed that he had discovered a key which offered a clear explanation of all the complex symbolism of Freemasonry and of nature itself. Kellner intended that O.T.O. preserve and confer this key. After the death of Reuss, English writer and occultis ...

The Stratagem And Other Stories
''The Stratagem and other Stories'' is a small book of short stories written by Aleister Crowley (1875–1947), occultist, ceremonial magician, poet, and prophet of Thelema. Contents The book was originally published in 1929 and one of a series of Crowley's works to be published by Mandrake Press after a period in which Crowley found it difficult to publish due both to his lack of funds, and his notoriety. Mandrake Press also published ''The Confessions of Aleister Crowley'' volumes I and II, and '' Moonchild''. Crowley published few collections of short stories, but the title story received such a good review from British novelist Joseph Conrad when he published it in ''The English Review'' that he thought it was a possible calling to conventional fame. The second story, "The Testament of Magdalen Blair," is the longest of the three and was originally published in ''The Equinox'' volume I, no.9 in 1913. It tells the haunting story of a psychic woman who delves into the dyi ...
