Liberty Music Shop Records
Liberty Music Shop Records was a record label formed in New York City in 1933. Its catalogue included Lee Wiley and Ethel Waters. At one time in the late 1930s, Liberty had three shops in New York City. They imported a number of records from the UK, as copies of British His Master's Voice's and Decca's have been found with large Liberty Music Shop stickers covering the foreign logos. In 1933, they started their own private recording label, using original masters recorded at Brunswick Records and later Decca studios. They specialized in dance music (Enric Madriguera, Freddy Martin, Emile Petti and Ted Straeter); cabaret and Broadway personalities (Beatrice Lillie, Ramona, Mabel Mercer, Ethel Merman, Cy Walter, Ethel Waters, and Lee Wiley); and niche acts like Casper Reardon and Bruz Fletcher. Lee Wiley
Lee Wiley (October 9, 1908 – December 11, 1975) was an American jazz singer during the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. Biography Wiley was born in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma. At fifteen, she left home to pursue a singing career, singing on New York City radio stations. Her career was interrupted by a fall while horseback riding. She suffered temporary blindness but recovered. At the age of 19 she was a member of the Leo Reisman Orchestra, with whom in 1931 she recorded three songs: "Take It from Me", "Time On My Hands", and her composition "Got the South in My Soul". Wiley began her radio career at KVOO in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She sang on the ''Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt'' program on NBC in 1932, and was featured on Victor Young's radio show in 1933. Stoughton J. "Bruz" Fletcher III (March 12, 1906 – February 8, 1941) was a gay musician and literary figure who came to prominence in Los Angeles during the 1930s. Casper Reardon
Casper Reardon (April 15, 1907 – March 9, 1941) was an American classical and jazz harpist. He studied classical harp at the Curtis Institute of Music and went on to play for the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Later on, he played jazz. The harp had been used in dance music for occasional flourishes before Reardon, but he is considered a first for using harp as a jazz instrument for solos and performances. By 1936, he was described as the "World's Hottest Harpist". During the following year he played "Cousin Caspar" in the film, '' You're a Sweetheart''. In 1938, he played harp for the Broadway musical, '' I Married an Angel''. As a jazz musician he can be heard on albums by Jack Teagarden and Paul Whiteman. He recorded a handful of records for Liberty Music Shop Records and Schirmer Records. He died in March 1941, in New York, at the age of 33 from kidney failure. Mabel Mercer (3 February 1900 – 20 April 1984) was an English-born cabaret singer who performed in the United States, Britain, and Europe with the greats in jazz and cabaret. She was a featured performer at Chez Bricktop in Paris, owned by the hostess Bricktop, and performed in such clubs as Le Ruban Bleu, Tony's, the RSVP, the Carlyle, the St. Regis Hotel, and eventually her own room, the Byline Club. Ethel Waters (October 31, 1896 – September 1, 1977) was an American singer and actress. Waters frequently performed jazz, swing, and pop music on the Broadway stage and in concerts. She began her career in the 1920s singing blues.
