Libbytown
Libbytown is a neighborhood in Portland, Maine, United States. One of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, it is located between the Stroudwater, Rosemont, Oakdale, and Parkside neighborhoods, and is separated from the city of South Portland by the Fore River. It extends to the intersection of Stevens Avenue and Congress Street. It was originally settled by Irish Catholic immigrants. Described as cohesive, it began to decline following the 1961 demolition of Union Station on St. John Street. Around the same time, the neighborhood was divided by the construction of Interstate 295 and the cloverleaf interchange which comprise exit 5. A long-standing Denny's restaurant occupied an area formerly known as Libby's Corner, between Park Avenue to the north and Congress Street to the south. Portland Railroad Company
Portland Railroad Company (PRR) was a Tram, trolleycar service that operated in Portland, Maine, between 1860 and 1941. History Portland & Forest Avenue Railroad Company (PFRC) was chartered in 1860 with the intent to build a streetcar line from Portland's Portland station (Grand Trunk), Grand Trunk station on India Street. Construction was delayed by the American Civil War, but used rail was obtained from New Brunswick in 1863 to complete a line from India Street along Middle Street, to the main hub at Monument Square (Portland, Maine), Monument Square. From there, they traveled west along Congress Street (Portland, Maine), Congress Street, and then down High Street (Portland, Maine), High Street, and west along Spring Street to Clark Street, Pine Street and Congress Street, then back east along Congress Street to High Street. Portland Transportation Center
Portland Transportation Center is a bus and train station in Portland, Maine, United States, served and run primarily by Concord Coach Lines (18 round-trips a day) and Amtrak '' Downeaster'' passenger trains (five round-trips a day). It is also served by Megabus (via Concord Coach Lines), as well as the Greater Portland Metro route 1 and BREEZ bus services. The station is open from 4:30 AM to 12:15 AM and from 2:45 AM to 3:15 AM. Portland Transportation Center is located in Portland's Libbytown neighborhood, about a half mile west of the former site of Portland Union Station. It is located next to Pan Am Railways' Mountain Branch, formerly the Mountain Division of the Maine Central Railroad. Union Station (Portland, Maine)
Union Station was a train station in the Libbytown neighborhood of Portland, Maine, which operated from 1888 to 1960. Located on St. John Street, it was demolished in 1961 and is now the site of a strip mall. History The station was designed by Boston architects Bradlee, Winslow & Wetherell, after medieval French châteaux. It was a primarily granite building, with a clock tower. The union station opened on June 25, 1888, serving trains of the Boston and Maine, Maine Central, and Portland and Ogdensburg railroads. The Grand Trunk Railway continued to use a different station two miles away on India Street. In September 1960, the Maine Central ended passenger rail service to the station. The last train departed on October 30, when the Boston and Maine moved its remaining trains out of the facility, though it would continue to operate Portland-Boston service until 1965. Stroudwater Historic District
Stroudwater Historic District is a historic district in the Stroudwater neighborhood of Portland, Maine. The district encompasses an important early village in the Portland area, significant as a shipbuilding and mill site established by Thomas Westbrook in 1727. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Description and history The historic center of the Stroudwater neighborhood of Portland is located on both sides of the Stroudwater River, at its mouth where it empties into the Fore River. The historic district encompasses a roughly triangular area, bounded on the northwest by a line extending along Penrith Road, the northeast by the Fore River, and the south by Garrison Street, although it extends a short way beyond Garrison on Westbrook Street. Fore River (Maine)
The Fore River is a short horn-shaped estuary, approximately long, separating Portland and South Portland in Maine in the United States. Many of the port facilities of the Portland harbor are along the estuary, which is formed just southwest of Portland by the confluence of several creeks. The estuary was initially known as Levett's River, so named by the first English settler of the Casco Bay region, Capt. Christopher Levett. But shortly afterwards, the estuary came to have the name by which it is known today. The Stroudwater River flows into the Fore River estuary. The Cumberland and Oxford Canal connected the estuary with Sebago Lake via the Stroudwater River from 1832 through 1870. Stevens Avenue (known colloquially as Stevens Ave) is a major street in the Neighborhoods in Portland, Maine, Deering neighborhood of Portland, Maine, United States.
