Liam Hennessy (footballer)
Liam Hennessy (1932 – 21 May 2019) was an Irish international footballer who played as an attacking left half, with a gifted left foot. Nicknamed "The Gunner" such was the power and shooting accuracy he delivered both from open play and from the penalty spot. (Source: Shamrock Rovers archive media) Lived in Dundrum, Dublin, Ireland, with wife Joan, and was a father of 5 children. He signed for Shamrock Rovers in 1949 after a season with Wolverhampton Wanderers and became part of the side popularly known as Coad's Colts, enjoying many memorable days during the 1950s. Shamrock Rovers dominated the football scene in the 1950s, and were instrumental in placing Irish Football on the global map Hennessy made a scoring debut on 23 December 1951 at Limerick scoring the first goal from 40 yards out in a 3–0 win. Dublin
Dublin (; , or ) is the capital and largest city of Ireland. Shamrock Rovers Football Club ( ga, Cumann Peile Ruagairí na Seamróige) is an Irish association football club based in Tallaght, South Dublin. The club's senior team competes in the League of Ireland Premier Division and it is the most successful club in the Republic of Ireland. Top Four Cup
The Top Four Cup was an association football super cup featuring the top four clubs in the League of Ireland. It was first held in 1955–56 and last played for in 1973–74. It was played at the end of the season. Shamrock Rovers were the inaugural winners and subsequently featured in seven finals. Waterford won the competition the most times, five times in total. The competition was sponsored by the ''Irish Independent'' and a result was also known as the Independent Cup. The cup was last won by Cork Celtic and is currently on display in the Evergreen Bar in Turners Cross, Cork. During the late 1960s the (Northern) Irish Football League also organised a Top Four Cup. The Dublin City Cup is a defunct Irish football tournament which was played for by all League of Ireland sides (and not just those from Dublin city as the name suggests). It ran from 1933 and ran uninterrupted until 1973. In the 1975–76 season it was revived and played for by sides who did not reach the League of Ireland Cup quarter-finals. In 1983–84 it was revived again but only eight teams were invited to play, the six Dublin sides (Bohemians, Shamrock Rovers, Shelbourne, St Patrick's Athletic, UCD and Home Farm) along with Drogheda United and Dundalk. It was played in a variety of formats; from complete round robin series to straight knock out tournaments. From the 1951–52 season it was played as a knockout tournament. The Leinster Senior Cup is an association football cup competition organized by the Leinster Football Association. It is currently contested by LFA affiliated League of Ireland clubs, Leinster Senior League Senior Division clubs and invited teams from the various LFA affiliated junior leagues. Before the introduction of the FAI Cup, it was considered the major cup competition for clubs in what is now the Republic of Ireland. The League of Ireland Shield ( ga, Sciath Sraithe na hÉireann) is a defunct Irish football tournament which was introduced when the League of Ireland started in 1921 and ran uninterrupted until 1972. It was played before the league season began and was seen as the third most important trophy in Irish football, after the league and FAI Cup. The winners of the Shield gained entry to the following season's Inter-Cities Fairs Cup until 1971–72. It was played in a variety of formats; from complete round robin series to group stages followed by knock out games to complete knock out tournaments. It was replaced by the League of Ireland Cup in 1973, though returned for one season in 1983–84.
