Li Jen-kuei
Paul Li, or Li Jen-kuei ( zh, c=李壬癸, p=Lǐ Rénguǐ; born 20 September 1936), is a Taiwanese linguist. Li is a research fellow at the Institute of Linguistics, Academia Sinica in Taipei, Taiwan. Li is a leading specialist on Formosan languages and has published dictionaries on the Pazeh and Kavalan languages. Li was elected a member of Academia Sinica in 2006. Formosan Languages
The Formosan languages are a geographic grouping comprising the languages of the indigenous peoples of Taiwan, all of which are Austronesian. They do not form a single subfamily of Austronesian but rather up to nine separate primary subfamilies. The Taiwanese indigenous peoples recognized by the government are about 2.3% of the island's population. However, only 35% speak their ancestral language, due to centuries of language shift. Of the approximately 26 languages of the Taiwanese indigenous peoples, at least ten are extinct, another four (perhaps five) are moribund, and all others are to some degree endangered. They are national languages of Taiwan. Pazeh Language
Pazeh (also spelled Pazih, Pazéh) and Kaxabu are dialects of a language of the Pazeh and Kaxabu, neighboring Taiwanese indigenous peoples. The language is Formosan, of the Austronesian language family. The last remaining native speaker of the Pazeh dialect died in 2010, but 12 speakers of Kaxabu remain. Classification Pazeh and Kaxabu are classified as a Formosan language of the Austronesian language family. Kavalan Language
Kavalan (also known as Kvalan, Kebalan or Kbalan) was formerly spoken in the Northeast coast area of Taiwan by the Kavalan people (噶瑪蘭). It is an East Formosan language of the Austronesian family. Kavalan is no longer spoken in its original area. As of 1930, it was used only as a home language. As of 1987, it was still spoken in Atayal territories. In 2000, this language was still reported to be spoken by 24 speakers but considered moribund. In 2017, a study using the EDGE metric from species conservation found that Kavalan, although critically endangered, was among the most lexically distinct of Austronesian languages. Dah-an Ho
Ho Dah-an (; born 22 September 1948) is a Taiwanese linguist. Education Ho earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1970, followed by a Master of Arts in 1973 and Doctorate of Chinese Literature in 1981. Career Ho was a research fellow in Academia Sinica's from 1981 to 1997 and switched affiliations to the preparatory office of the Institute of Linguistics in 1997. Ho served as director of the preparatory office from 2000 to 2004, when the organization formally became the Institute of Linguistics. He remained affiliated with the Institute of Linguistics through 2008 as a research fellow and was also director of the fully fledged institute from 2006 to 2008.
