Leycett
Leycett is a village in the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire, England. It was built in the late 1860s to accommodate miners and their families at the nearby collieries and coal mines. Population details as taken at the 2011 census can be found under Madeley with the name Leycett meaning 'the clearing in the woods'. Leycett Colliery Mining in Leycett was first mentioned back in Roman times and continued into the nineteenth century which is when in 1801, a leasehold agreement was taken out for thirty three years to mine coal on land at Leycett, between John the First Lord Crewe, Walter Sneyd of Keele, Thomas Breek of Keele and James Breek of Newcastle. By 1834 local industrialist Thomas Firmstone had taken over the lease and in 1838 constructed a three and half mile tramline from the colliery to link up with the mainline at Madeley Station to help transport his coal all over the country. Leycett Railway Station
Leycett railway station was a railway station that served the village of Leycett in the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire, England. The station was situated on the North Staffordshire Railway (NSR) Audley branch line. The Audley line ran from a junction on the Stoke to Crewe line near to a junction between and on the Stoke to Market Drayton Line Like many of the lines opened by the NSR the Audley line was built primarily to carry mineral traffic. The line opened in 1870. Still, passenger services were not introduced until 1880, partly due to the need to build a junction from the Audley line that would allow trains to run directly towards Stoke, rather than having to reverse at the junction, which was how the line was originally constructed. The decision to introduce passenger trains over the line led to the opening of a station to serve the mining village of Leycett in June 1880. Dean Headley
Dean Warren Headley (born 27 January 1970) is a former English professional cricketer who played as a right-arm fast bowler for the England cricket team. Domestically he played for Middlesex and Kent County Cricket Clubs. Headley is now an ECB match referee and the current director of cricket at Blundell's School. Playing career Headley was born in Stourbridge and comes from a famous cricketing family, being the son of Ron Headley and grandson of George Headley. Hollywood Music Festival
The Hollywood Music Festival was held at Leycett in an area called Hollywood on the grounds of Ted Askey's Lower (pig) Farm at Finney Green, between Silverdale and Leycett, near Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, England, on 23 and 24 May 1970. It was notable for the first performance of Grateful Dead in the UK and also for the performance of Jose Feliciano and Mungo Jerry, and featured such notable bands as Free, Ginger Baker's Air Force, Colosseum, Family, Black Sabbath and Traffic. The company responsible for the festival was Onista Ltd, who promptly went bankrupt unable to pay festival staff. Onista was an offshoot of Eliot Cohen's Red Bus company, with Ellis Elias and Elliot Cohen as the promoters. It was estimated to have been attended by an estimated 45,000. The North Staffordshire Railway (NSR) was a Great Britain, British railway company formed in 1845 to promote a number of lines in the Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire Potteries and surrounding areas in Staffordshire, Cheshire, Derbyshire and Shropshire. Madeley is a village and ward in the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme, North Staffordshire, England. It is split into three parts: Madeley, Middle Madeley, and Little Madeley. Madeley Heath is also considered by many to be part of Madeley. In the 2001 census, the population was recorded as 4,386, decreasing to 4,222 at the 2011 Census.
