''Ley'' (''the Ley'', plural: the ''Leyen'') is an old German word for rock (geology), rock, cliff or crag (climbing), crag which often occurs in placenames. Etymology ''Ley'', also ''lay'', ''lei'', ''lai'', ''laige'' or ''lägge'', and, according to Grimm, ''leie'', is a commonly occurring name for rocks or crags in the Rhenish and Lower German language regions. It is derived from the Old Saxon word, ''lêia''. It is particularly associated with rock precipices (''Felsabbrüche'') and rock faces (''Felswände''), but also with rock slabs (''Felsplatte''). Hugh Ley
Hugh Ley (1790 – 24 January 1837) was an English physician. Biography Ley was born in 1790 at Abingdon, Berkshire, where his father, Hugh Ley (1762–1826), was for a time a medical practitioner, afterwards settling at St. Ives, Cornwall. Hugh was educated at Dr. John Lemprière's school in his native town; subsequently became a student of the then united medical schools of St. Thomas's and Guy's Hospitals in Southwark, and took the diploma of the College of Surgeons. He then studied at Edinburgh, where he graduated M.D. 24 June 1813. His graduation thesis was on the pathology of phthisis. On 30 Sept. 1818 he was admitted a licentiate of the College of Physicians of London, and began practice in London as a man midwife. He was elected physician to the Westminster Lying-in Hospital, and soon afterwards became lecturer on midwifery at the Middlesex Hospital. Thomas John Ley
Thomas John Ley (28 October 188024 July 1947) was an Australian politician who was convicted of murder in England. He is widely suspected to have been involved in the deaths of a number of people in Australia, including political rivals. Early life Ley was born on 28 October 1880 in Bath, Somerset, England, one of four children born to Elizabeth (née Bryant) and Henry Ley. His father, who worked as a butler, died in 1882. In 1886, Ley's mother moved the family to Australia along with his maternal grandmother. They settled in Sydney, where he attended Crown Street Public School until the age of 10. He began working as a young boy, initially as a paper-boy and messenger, then later as an assistant in his mother's grocery store and as a farm labourer at Windsor, New South Wales, Windsor. Terrence Richard Ley (born February 21, 1947) is an American former baseball pitcher who began his career in the season for the New York Yankees. He was a student of University of Oregon before he was drafted in the 3rd round of the January 1967 draft and was 24 when he made his major league debut on August 20, 1971, for the Yankees. He played in 6 major league games. Career Ley attended Madison High School in Portland, Oregon. He was initially drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 30th round of the 1965 Major League Baseball draft, but chose not to sign. Sophie Ley (1849–1918) was a German painter. Ley was born in 1849 in Bodmann am Bodensee, Kingdom of Württemberg. She studied painting with Hans Gude and at the Academia Artium Stuttgardens. She also studied with Eugen Bracht at the Academy of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe. Ley exhibited her work at the Woman's Building at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. Robert Ley (; 15 February 1890 – 25 October 1945) was a German Nazi politician and head of the German Labour Front during its entire existence, from 1933 to 1945. He also held many other high positions in the Nazi Party, including , and . Son of a farmer from the Rhine Province, Ley saw action in both the eastern and western fronts of the First World War and received the Iron Cross Second Class. After the war he resumed his studies in chemistry, obtained his doctorate, and worked for IG Farben as a food chemist. Richard Norman Ley (born November 2, 1948) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) and World Hockey Association (WHA). Playing career Ley was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the third round (16th overall) in the 1966 NHL Amateur Draft. He played four seasons with the Maple Leafs ( 1968–69 to 1971–72) in the NHL before leaving to play with the New England Whalers of the WHA. He would remain with the Whalers' organisation in the WHA until that league folded in 1979. The Whalers, along with three other teams from the WHA's remaining six, were absorbed into the NHL in 1979. Ley made the transition with the New England Whalers (who would become the Hartford Whalers) and finished his professional playing career in 1981.
