The Miss South Dakota USA competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of South Dakota in the Miss USA pageant. It is currently directed by Future Productions based in Savage, Minnesota since 2002. South Dakota has placed five times. One notable Miss South Dakota USA was Vanessa Short Bull (2000), one of the first Native Americans to compete at Miss USA. Short Bull was also Miss South Dakota 2002. South Dakota's best placement in the competition was Madison Nipe placing in the top five in 2018. The current titleholder is Ahmitara Alwal of Sioux Falls who was crowned on May 12, 2024 at the Watertown Event Center in Watertown. She represented South Dakota at the Miss USA 2024 pageant in August 2024. Miss America
Miss America is an annual competition that is open to women from the United States between the ages of 18 and 28. Originating in 1921 as a "bathing beauty revue", the contest is judged on competition segments with scoring percentages: ''Private Interview'' (30%) – a 10-minute press conference-style interview with a panel of judges, ''On Stage Question'' (10%) – answering a judge's question onstage, ''Talent or HER Story'' (20%) – a performance talent or 90 second speech, ''Health and Fitness'' (20%) – demonstrated physical fitness onstage dressed in athletic wear, and ''Evening Gown'' (20%) – modeling evening-wear onstage. Miss South Dakota Teen USA
The Miss South Dakota Teen USA competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of South Dakota in the Miss Teen USA pageant. South Dakota's highest placement was in 1986 when Valerie Marsden placed 4th runner-up to Allison Brown of Oklahoma. Their most recent placement was in 2024, when Olivia Odenbrett placed in the top 20. Four Miss South Dakota Teen USA titleholders have won the Miss South Dakota USA pageant and competed at Miss USA. The pageant was first held in 1982 to select a winner to represent the state at Miss Teen USA 1983. It has been directed by Future Productions since 2002 and is a subsidiary of the Miss Universe Organization. It has been held in Sioux Falls, Aberdeen, Rapid City, Pierre , Brookings, Brandon, and Watertown. Miss USA 2014 was the 63rd Miss USA pageant, held at the Baton Rouge River Center Arena in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on June 8, 2014. All fifty states and the District of Columbia competed. Miss USA 2018 was the 67th Miss USA pageant. It was held on May 21, 2018 at the Hirsch Memorial Coliseum in Shreveport, Louisiana. Miss USA 2019 was the 68th Miss USA pageant, held at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada on May 2, 2019. The 2019 competition served as the second consecutive time that the pageant has been held concurrently with the Miss Teen USA competition.
