Lewis Wallbridge
Lewis Wallbridge (November 27, 1816 – October 20, 1887) was a lawyer, judge and political figure in Canada West. In 1882, he was appointed Chief Justice of Manitoba. He was born in Belleville in 1816. He studied at Upper Canada College, articled in law and was called to the bar in 1839. In 1855, he became a Queen's Counsel. In 1857, he was elected to represent Hastings South in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada. He supported representation by population and opposed government subsidies to the Grand Trunk Railway. He was re-elected in 1861 and 1863. He was chosen as solicitor general in the 1863 government led by John Sandfield Macdonald and Antoine-Aimé Dorion and was chosen as speaker for the 8th Parliament of the Province of Canada. His brother, Thomas Campbell Wallbridge, represented Hastings North from 1863 to 1867. Legislative Assembly Of The Province Of Canada
The Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada was the lower house of the Parliament of the Province of Canada. The Province of Canada consisted of the former province of Lower Canada, then known as Canada East (now Quebec), and Upper Canada, then known as Canada West (now Ontario). It was created by the Act of Union 1840. Canada East and Canada West each elected 42 members to the assembly for the first four parliaments. In 1853, following the 1851 Canadian census, the number of seats in the assembly was increased by the 4th Parliament of the Province of Canada from 84 to 130, 65 for each section, even though Canada West had a slightly larger population. Antoine-Aimé Dorion
Sir Antoine-Aimé Dorion (January 17, 1818May 31, 1891) was a French Canadian politician and jurist. Early years Dorion was born in Ste-Anne-de-la-Pérade into a family with liberal values that had been sympathetic to the Patriotes in 1837–1838. His father, merchant Pierre-Antoine Dorion, was a representative of the Patriote party in the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada from 1830 to 1838. After studies at the Nicolet seminary from 1830 to 1837, in his twenty-second year went to Montreal to read law with Côme-Séraphin Cherrier, an eminent lawyer with whom he retained a lasting friendship. On the 6th of January 1842 he was admitted to the bar of the province, became the partner of M. Cherrier, and in the course of a few years attained the highest rank in his profession. Bank Of Upper Canada
The Bank of Upper Canada was established in 1821 under a charter granted by the legislature of Upper Canada in 1819 to a group of Kingston merchants. The charter was appropriated by the more influential Executive Councillors to the Lt. Governor, the Rev. John Strachan and William Allan, and moved to Toronto. The bank was closely associated with the group that came to be known as the Family Compact, and it formed a large part of their wealth. The association with the Family Compact and its underhanded practices made Reformers, including Mackenzie, regard the Bank of Upper Canada as a prop of the government. Hastings West (federal Electoral District)
Hastings West was a federal electoral district in the province of Ontario, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1925. It was created by the British North America Act 1867 which divided the County of Hastings, divided into three ridings: Hastings West, Hastings East and Hastings North. The West Riding consisted of the Town of Belleville, the Township of Sydney, and the Village of Trenton. In 1903, the county of Hastings was divided into two ridings: Hastings West and Hastings East. The west riding consisted of the townships of Sydney, Rawdon, Huntingdon, Marmora and Lake, Wollaston, Faraday, Herschel, McClure, Wicklow and Bangor, the city of Belleville, the town of Trenton, and the villages of Marmora and Sterling. Thomas Campbell Wallbridge (January 2, 1830 – January 22, 1881https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/135950604/thomas-campbell-wallbridge) was a lawyer and political figure in Canada West. He represented North Hastings in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada from 1863 to 1866. He was born in Belleville, Canada West and was educated at Upper Canada College, the Sorbonne, the École de Droit in France and the universities of Geneva and Montpellier. The 8th Parliament of the Province of Canada was summoned in August 1863, following the general election for the Legislative Assembly in August 1863. The Parliament was abolished when the ''British North America Act, 1867'' (now the ''Constitution Act, 1867'') came into force on July 1, 1867, creating the new country of Canada. The members were elected in a mixture of multi-member districts (four in East Canada, ten in West Canada), each electing two members, and single-member districts, using Block voting and first past the post respectively. John Sandfield Macdonald
John Sandfield Macdonald, (December 12, 1812 – June 1, 1872) was the joint premier of the Province of Canada from 1862 to 1864. He was also the first premier of Ontario from 1867 to 1871, one of the four founding provinces created at Canadian Confederation, Confederation in 1867. He served as both premier and Attorney General of Ontario, attorney general of Ontario from July 16, 1867, to December 20, 1871.
