Ashkenazi Jews
Ashkenazi Jews ( ; also known as Ashkenazic Jews or Ashkenazim) form a distinct subgroup of the Jewish diaspora, that emerged in the Holy Roman Empire around the end of the first millennium CE. They traditionally speak Yiddish, a language that originated in the 9th century, and largely migrated towards northern and eastern Europe during the late Middle Ages due to persecution. Hebrew was primarily used as a literary and sacred language until its 20th-century revival as a common language in Israel. Ashkenazim adapted their traditions to Europe and underwent a transformation in their interpretation of Judaism. Ed Levinson
Edward Levinson (March 2, 1898, to December 26, 1981) was an American criminal and gambling operator. He was raised in Chicago, Illinois, then joined the underworld in Detroit, Detroit, Michigan, in the 1920s and became an associate of Meyer Lansky. Levinson and his brothers moved to Newport, Kentucky, in the 1930s, where they dominated illegal gambling. In the 1940s he moved to Miami, then in 1952 to Las Vegas, where he became a part owner and operator of various legitimate hotels and casinos. For several years he ran the Fremont Hotel and Casino. Illegal FBI tapes seemed to show that Levinson was involved in skimming profits for delivery to hidden underworld partners. Horace Clifford Levinson (30 June 1895, in Chicago – 1968, in Kennebunk, Maine) was an American mathematician, astronomer, and pioneer of operations research, introducing quantitative methods and sophisticated mathematical models into advertising and merchandising. Horace C. Levinson's father was the noted Chicago lawyer Salmon Oliver Levinson. In 1909 the Society of Practical Astronomical was founded by two teenagers: Frederick Charles Leonard (1896–1960) as president and H. C. Levinson as treasurer. Harold Levinson is an American psychiatrist and author, known for developing his cerebellar theory of treating dyslexia. Career in psychiatry Levinson has pursued alternative theories and treatments for dyslexia since the 1960s. In 1973 he and Jan Frank published an article in the ''Journal of Child Psychiatry'' suggesting dyslexia was caused by a faulty connection between the cerebellum and the other parts of the brain, instead of the cerebrum. By 1974 Levinson's cerebellar and related inner-ear theory that dyslexia has been mentioned in the popular press. Gerald Charles Levinson (born June 22, 1951 in Westport, Connecticut) is an American composer of contemporary classical music. Life At university, he studied with George Crumb, Richard Wernick, and George Rochberg. After college, Levinson went to study composition with Olivier Messiaen at the Paris Conservatory. He was inspired by Messiaen's use of birdsong and his unique harmonic ideas, as well as the musics of Bali and India. Levinson has also worked with Simon Rattle, Ralph Shapey, and Seiji Ozawa. His notable works include ''Anahata'', Symphony No. 2, and ''Black Magic/White Magic'' (1981), a collaboration with his wife, poet Nanine Valen.
