Lester E. Cox
Lester Edmund Cox (August 22, 1895 – August 14, 1968) was an American business executive with interests in mass media, distribution, transportation, and banking in southwest Missouri. He is best known for his service to Burge Hospital ( CoxHealth), which adopted his namesake upon his death. Early life Lester Edmund Cox was born to James Mitchell Cox and Amanda Belle Britain Cox, in Republic, Missouri. He was raised on a farm as a child, finding additional work in the community. In 1915, Cox attended Drury College, becoming close friends with room-mate Ernest R. Breech. While attending Drury, Cox bought the advertising rights to the school's newspaper, the Drury Mirror, to then resell to Springfield businesses for a profit. He would also sell shoes on campus that he had purchased in bulk. Cox later joined the US Air Corps in 1917 during WWI, narrowly escaping death in a plane crash which proved fatal for his co-pilot. Republic is a city in Christian and Greene counties in the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2020 census, the city's population was 18,750. In 2019, its population was 16,938, making it the second largest city in Greene County in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is also the fourth largest city in the Springfield, Missouri, Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Early settlement in southwest Greene County centered on the community of Little York. When the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad built a line through the area in the early 1870s, Little York was not on the route. Ford Tractor Company was a Minneapolis-based company active from 1916 to 1917, that built tractors to facilitate "horseless farming". History Ford Tractor Company was incorporated on March 15, 1915, by W. Baer Ewing and Paul W. Ford. Prior to founding the company, Ewing worked in the insurance business. The choice of name has been assessed as deceptive by later commentators. Businessman W. Baer Ewing had hired tractor designer Robert Kinkaid to develop his product line, but named the company after one Paul Ford, a local hardware clerk Ewing had hired, allegedly to leverage the Ford name to take advantage of customer confusion with Henry Ford. The Ford N-series tractors were a line of farm tractors produced by the Ford Motor Company between 1939 and 1952, spanning the 9N, 2N, and 8N models.. The 9N was the first American-made production-model tractor to incorporate Harry Ferguson's three-point hitch system, a design still used on most modern tractors today. It was released in October 1939. The 2N, introduced in 1942, was the 9N with some features changed or removed due to the restraints of wartime manufacturing. The 8N, which debuted in July 1947, was a largely new machine featuring more power and an improved transmission. KCMO (710 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Kansas City, Missouri. Owned by Cumulus Media, the station airs a talk radio format. The studios and offices are on Indian Creek Parkway in Overland Park, Kansas. KCMO is also heard on KCHZ (95.7 FM) in Ottawa, Kansas and on the second HD Radio channel of co-owned KCFX (101.1) in Harrisonville, Missouri. The AM transmitter is off North Eastern Road, near Interstate 435, on Kansas City's Northeast side.
