A mesoregion ( pt, Mesorregião) was a subdivision of the Brazilian states, grouping together various municipalities in proximity and with common characteristics. They were abolished in 2017 and replaced by "intermediary geographic regions". The mesoregions were created by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics for statistical purposes and did not, therefore, constitute political or administrative areas. Rio Grande do Norte (, , ) is one of the states of Brazil. It is located in the northeastern region of the country, forming the northeasternmost tip of the South American continent. The name literally translates as "Great Northern River", referring to the mouth of the Potengi River. The capital and largest city is Natal. The state has 410 km (254 mi) of sandy beaches and contains Rocas Atoll, the only atoll the Atlantic Ocean. Macaíba is a municipality in the state of Rio Grande do Norte in the Northeast region of Brazil. Climate Macaíba has a rather dry tropical savanna climate (Köppen ''As'') with like most of the ''Nordeste'' coast a strong dry season from September to January.
