Leslie Ephraims
Leslie Ephraims (born 21 January 1927) was a Sri Lankan rugby union player and referee. He was affectionately called as Letcho by his teammates at the Havelock Sports Club during his playing career. Personal life He married Daphne on 15 August 1953 and domiciled in Brisbane, Australia after their marriage. He had two brothers Conrad Ephraims and Desmond Ephraims. Career He pursued his primary and secondary education at the St. Peter's College, Colombo and he left the school at the age of 16 years in order to join the Fleet of the AIRARM Royal Navy. He captained Sri Lanka Police Rugby team for a duration of five years stretching from 1955 to 1960, but he was granted special permission to represent the Havelock Sports Club, when the Police team did not take part in the Clifford Cup tournaments during those preceding years. Havelock Sports Club
Havelock Sports Club is a Division 'A' rugby union team based in Sri Lanka that plays in the Dialog Rugby League. The club has a long history and rugby is the club's main sporting activity. The "Havies", as they are commonly known amongst its members, is situated in Colombo and the club's ground is known as Havelock Park. The club has produced some excellent players over the last few decades including Sri Lankan Nationals such as Michael Jayasekera, Hisham Abdeen, Graham Raux, Sanjeewa Jayasinghe and Rajeev Ganapathy. The club has struggled over the last decade to retain its players with their star performers crossing over to more star-powered clubs. This has changed with the help of former Sri Lanka, Ceylonese R & FC fly-half Asanga Seneviratne, who is the current head of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union. Sri Lanka Police Sports Club (Police SC) is a Division 'A' rugby union team based in Sri Lanka, competing in the Dialog Rugby League. It is the rugby union team of the Sri Lanka Police Sports Club. History On 27 January 1881 a team of Police officers participated in a rugby game at the “Kew Garden” Park in Malay Street, Slave Island. In 1891 a team from the Pettah Police Station played a rugby match. In 1961 Police SC together with Division 'B' teams from Air Force, Army SC, Navy and University were permitted to play alongside the Division 'A' clubs, Ceylonese Rugby & Football Club, Colombo Hockey and Football Club, Havelock SC, Kandy SC, Dimbula Athletic & Cricket Club, Dickoya Maskeliya Cricket Club, Uva and Kelani Valley Club in the Clifford Cup competition. Clifford Cup
The Clifford Cup is the most prestigious club rugby knockout tournament in Sri Lanka, and arguably the oldest rugby tournament in Asia. The Clifford Cup commenced in 1911 and has been played continuously since 1950, having completed 79 seasons. The tournament began as a competition between the mercantile executives in Colombo and planters in the hill country. Hugh Aldons
Hugh Cecil Aldons (6 April 1925 – 27 June 2024) was a Sri Lankan–Australian sportsman, a triple international who represented Ceylon at three sports in the 1950s: hockey, cricket and rugby union. He captained the national hockey and cricket teams. He migrated to Australia in 1957. Sporting career Aldons attended Royal College, Colombo, where he played as an all-rounder in the First XI in the annual cricket match against S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia, in 1942, 1943 and 1944. In April 1957, in his only first-class match, he captained the Ceylon team to victory over Madras in the annual Gopalan Trophy match. Aldons represented Ceylon at hockey from 1947 to 1957. He began his international career in 1947 in field hockey against neighbouring India and also played against heavyweights Pakistan in 1955. Sumanthiran Navaratnam (21 May 1925 – 19 October 2023), also known as Sumana Navaratnam or Summa Navaratnam, was a Sri Lankan track and field athlete, rugby union player, coach and business executive. He was regarded as one of the finest sportspeople from Sri Lanka. He was considered as the oldest living Sri Lankan athlete until his death.
