Les Méchins
Les Méchins is a municipality in Quebec, Canada, about east of Matane along Quebec Route 132. In addition to Les Méchins (formerly known as Grands-Méchins) itself, the municipality also includes the communities of Anse-des-Méchins, Cherbourg, Cherbourg-Centre, Les Îlets Méchins, and Petits-Méchins. The name Méchins is of uncertain origin although according to one theory, it may come from the French word ''méchants'', meaning "wicked", and referring to rocks in the sea that would make navigation there dangerous. Another, less likely suggestion is that it may be a transformation of "Matsi", a tall one-eyed monster of Mi'kmaq folklore who would come down from the mountains with a stick as big as a tree to terrorize the local people. Matane
Matane is a town on the Gaspé Peninsula in Quebec, Canada, on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River at the mouth of the Matane River. The town is the seat for the La Matanie Regional County Municipality. In addition to Matane itself, the town's territory also includes the communities of Petit-Matane and Saint-Luc-de-Matane. There is a ferry service which crosses the river to Baie-Comeau and Godbout on the north shore as well as a rail ferry service to Baie-Comeau and Sept-Îles. Etymology The name Matane was first assigned to the river by Samuel de Champlain as "''Mantanne''" in 1603. Its meaning is open to different interpretations, with the most common one being that it comes from the Mi'kmaq word ''mtctan'' meaning "beaver pond", since the region had an abundant beaver population. Rivière-Bonjour, Quebec
Rivière-Bonjour is an unorganized territory in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region of Quebec, Canada. A large part of the territory is part of the Matane Wildlife Reserve. The eponymous Bonjour River is a long stream roughly in the centre of the territory that has its source at the south-eastern slopes of the Chic-Choc Mountains, including the high Mont Blanc. The stream joins the Matane River at Matane Lake. Cap-Chat, Quebec
Cap-Chat is a town in the Canadian province of Québec, in the Regional County Municipality of Haute-Gaspésie, and in the administrative region of Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine. Cap-Chat is found west of Sainte-Anne-des-Monts. , Cap-Chat's population is 2,777. In addition to Cap-Chat itself, the town's territory also includes the communities of Cap-Chat-Est, Capucins, and Petit-Fonds. History There are two theories about the origin of the town's name. One simply holds that the headland called Cap-Chat bore a likeness to a cat ("chat" in French). The other theory is a bit more fanciful. According to a local legend, a cat walking along the shore killed and ate various animals, whereupon the "cat fairy" accused him of having eaten her offspring. The 2016 Canadian census was an enumeration of Canadian residents, which counted a population of 35,151,728, a change from its 2011 population of 33,476,688. The census, conducted by Statistics Canada, was Canada's seventh quinquennial census. The official census day was May 10, 2016. Census web access codes began arriving in the mail on May 2, 2016. The 2016 census marked the reinstatement of the mandatory long-form census, which had been dropped in favour of the voluntary National Household Survey for the 2011 census. With a response rate of 98.4%, this census is said to be the best one ever recorded since the 1666 census of New France. This census was succeeded by Canada's 2021 census.
