Jean-Pierre Serre (; born 15 September 1926) is a French mathematician who has made contributions to algebraic topology, algebraic geometry and algebraic number theory. He was awarded the Fields Medal in 1954, the Wolf Prize in 2000 and the inaugural Abel Prize in 2003. Biography Personal life Born in Bages, Pyrénées-Orientales, to pharmacist parents, Serre was educated at the Lycée de Nîmes. Then he studied at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris from 1945 to 1948. He was awarded his doctorate from the Sorbonne in 1951. From 1948 to 1954 he held positions at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris. Sylvester–Gallai Theorem
The Sylvester–Gallai theorem in geometry states that every finite set of points in the Euclidean plane has a line that passes through exactly two of the points or a line that passes through all of them. It is named after James Joseph Sylvester, who posed it as a problem in 1893, and Tibor Gallai, who published one of the first proofs of this theorem in 1944. A line that contains exactly two of a set of points is known as an ''ordinary line''. Another way of stating the theorem is that every finite set of points that is not collinear has an ordinary line. Leonard Mascot Blumenthal (February 27, 1901 – August 1984) was a Jewish American mathematician. Career He received his Ph.D. in 1927 from Johns Hopkins University, under the supervision of Frank Morley; his dissertation was titled ''Lagrange Resolvents in Euclidean Geometry''. He taught for the majority of his professional career at the University of Missouri and was the author of ''A Modern View of Geometry''. He was a visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study from 1933 to 1936.
