Lepo Mikko
Lepo Mikko (legal name Lepo Mikk; December 7, 1911 – December 6, 1978) was an Estonian painter and teacher. Early life and education Lepo Mikko was born Leonid Mikk in Aruküla, a former village in Viljandi County in the Russian Empire's Governorate of Livonia, the son of the farmer Jaak Mikk (1876–?) and Anna Mikk (née Järv, 1880–?). He graduated from Tuhalaane Primary School in 1927. Inspired by Juhan Muks, a painter from a neighboring farm, Leonid decided to devote himself to art studies. From 1927 to 1930, he studied decorative painting at the State Industrial Art School in Tallinn under the artists and . From 1930 to 1932, he studied painting at the Pallas Art School in Tartu. His teachers there were Voldemar Mellik and Villem Ormisson. Tõnis Soop
Tõnis Soop (July 27, 1937 – March 16, 2016) was an Estonian painter and teacher. Early life and education Tõnis Soop was born to Tõnis Soop (1889–1953) and Elli Soop (née Laderlich, 1905–1987) at the Kingu farm on the estate of Suure-Kõpu Manor. From 1952 to 1957, he studied at the Tartu School of Fine Arts, graduating as a teacher of drawing and sketching. He then studied drawing and painting at the Tallinn Pedagogical Institute for two years. In 1965, he enrolled in the Estonian National Art Institute and studied painting. He graduated in 1971 as a painter and teacher. Career During his studies and afterward, Soop worked as a drawing teacher from 1958 to 1966, as an artist at the Estonian SSR State Philharmonic from 1960 to 1961, at from 1965 to 1987, and at the Kirov Collective Fishing Farm (later Esmar) from 1972 to 1992. People's Artist of the USSR ( rus, Народный артист СССР, Narodny artist SSSR), also sometimes translated as National Artist of the USSR, was an honorary title granted to artists of the Soviet Union. Nomenclature and significance The term is confusingly used to translate two Russian language titles: Народный артист СССР (fem. Народная артистка СССР), awarded in performing arts and Народный художник СССР, granted in some visual arts. Each Soviet Republic, as well as the Autonomous Republics (ASSRs), had a similar award held previously by virtually every receiver of the higher title of People's Artist of the USSR. As this title was granted by the government, honorees were afforded certain privileges and would often receive commissions from the Minister of Culture of the Soviet Union. The Art Museum of Estonia ( et, Eesti Kunstimuuseum) was established in 1919. Originally based in Kadriorg Palace, the museum has expanded across several sites and today exhibits both international and local art works. At the end of the 1970s, in the 1980s the first branches of the Art Museum of Estonia were founded. Starting in 1995, all of the branches offer different educational programmes for children and young people. Tartu Art Museum (Estonian: ''Tartu Kunstimuuseum'') is a state-owned museum of art located in Tartu, Estonia. It was founded in 1940 on a private initiative by the members of local art school Pallas. This is the largest art museum in Southern Estonia. The main collection consists of works of art by Estonian and foreign artists, associated with Estonia, from the 18th century until now. The collection includes around 23,000 items. Mall Valk
Mall Valk (née Mall Sooster; June 2, 1935 – October 12, 1976) was an Estonian ceramist. Early life and education Mall Valk was born in Ühtri, Estonia as the daughter of the teachers Julius Sooster (1902–1942) and Elvi Sooster (1909–1978). When she was six years old, her father was executed by the NKVD in Irkutsk. In 1961, she graduated from the State Art Institute of the Estonian SSR (now the Estonian Academy of Arts). Career In the 1960s and 1970s, Valk created humorous and sometimes grotesque plastic works based on situations and puns in ceramic. She was one of the ceramists that executed a panel in the Central Library of the Estonian Academy of Sciences in 1964 based on a design by Lepo Mikko. She died of lung cancer in Tallinn in 1976.
