Leopoldo Verdugo Quiroz
Leopoldo L. Verdugo Quiroz (born 1 March 1898) was a Mexican businessman, customs official, and politician affiliated with the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). In 1954, he was elected one of Baja California's inaugural Senators alongside Esteban Cantú, serving in the XLII and XLIII Legislatures of the Congress of the Union. Early life Verdugo Quiroz was born on 1 March 1898, in Álamos, Sonora. His parents, Leopoldo Verdugo Perrón and Natalia Quirós Quirós, married in 1895 and had 14 children. Verdugo Quiroz attended elementary school in Álamos, but dropped out of school and later fought in the Mexican Revolution. His father was a personal friend of Álvaro Obregón and worked as a government official – at one point he was responsible for nation's military purchases. The Senate of the Republic (), constitutionally the Chamber of Senators of the Honorable Congress of the Union (), is the upper house of Mexico's Bicameralism, bicameral Congress of the Union, Congress. It currently consists of 128 members, who serve six-year terms. History A bicameral legislature, including the Senate, was established on 4 October 1824. The Senate was abolished on 7 September 1857 and re-established on 13 November 1874. Under the regime of Porfirio Díaz (the Porfiriato: 1876–1910), many seats were given to elites and wealthy people loyal to the regime. During the Mexican Revolution, notably during the brief presidency of Francisco I. Madero, the Senate was left intact with Porfirian sympathizers, who blocked the president's attempts to pass reforms for the Revolution. Zeta (magazine)
''Zeta'' is a Mexican magazine published every Friday in Tijuana by Choix Editores. ''Zeta'' is distributed primarily in Baja California, in the cities of Tijuana, Tecate, Rosarito, Ensenada, and Mexicali. It was founded in 1980 by Jesús Blancornelas, known as "the spiritual godfather of modern Mexican journalism", along with Héctor Félix Miranda and Francisco Ortiz Franco. The magazine regularly runs exposés on corruption in local and federal governments as well as on organized crime and drug trafficking, resulting in numerous threats and attacks against its staff. Félix was murdered in 1988 by bodyguards of politician Jorge Hank Rhon, while Ortiz was assassinated in 2004, apparently for his coverage of the Tijuana Cartel. Blancornelas was also ambushed by gunmen in 1997; though one of his bodyguards was killed, Blancornelas managed to survive his wounds.
