Leopard Temple
The Leopard Temple () is the name of an archaeological site of a 7,000 year old temple in the Uvda (Israel), Uvda basin of the Negev in southern Israel. The name refers to the Arabian leopard, which is no longer found in Israel. The site was investigated by Uzi Avner and Ora Yogev on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority. It was first discovered in the early 1980s by an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) tank that passed near it; the site was accidentally destroyed by IDF tanks in the late 1980s during a military exercise. Uvda (Israel)
Uvda () is the name of a region in the southern Negev desert, directly north of Eilat. The name derives from the Hebrew word ''uvda'' (meaning fact). The region was captured during Operation Uvda in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War when the Israel Defense Forces entered the area with the stated aim of establishing 'facts on the ground', hence the name. The Uvda Valley is known for the 7000-year-old Leopard Temple archaeological site. Negev
The Negev ( ; ) or Naqab (), is a desert and semidesert region of southern Israel. The region's largest city and administrative capital is Beersheba (pop. ), in the north. At its southern end is the Gulf of Aqaba and the resort town, resort city and port of Eilat. It contains several development towns, including Dimona, Arad, Israel, Arad, and Mitzpe Ramon, as well as a number of small Negev Bedouin, Bedouin towns, including Rahat, Tel Sheva, and Lakiya. Arabian Leopard
The Arabian leopard (''Panthera pardus nimr'') is the smallest leopard subspecies. It was described in 1830 and is native to the Arabian Peninsula, where it was widely distributed in rugged hilly and montane terrain until the late 1970s. Today, the population is severely fragmented and thought to decline continuously. In 2008, an estimated 45–200 individuals in three isolated subpopulations were restricted to western Saudi Arabia, Oman and Yemen. However, as of 2023, it is estimated that 100–120 in total remain, with 70-84 mature individuals, in Oman and Yemen, and it is possibly extinct in Saudi Arabia. The current population trend is suspected to be decreasing.
