Leontii Depreradovich
Leontii Ivanovich Depreradovich (1766 – 19 February 1844) was a major general of the Imperial Russian Army during the Napoleonic Wars. He was the elder brother of fellow general Nikolay Depreradovich, both scions of a Serbian noble family that settled in Russia. Depreradovich participated in the War of the Fourth Coalition and the War of the Fifth Coalition and served as commander of the Semyonovsky Life Guards Regiment between 1799 and 1807. Russian Tradition Of The Knights Hospitaller
The Russian tradition of the Knights Hospitaller is a collection of charitable organisations claiming continuity with the Russian Orthodox grand priory of the Order of Saint John. The order emerged when Malta was captured by Napoleon in 1798 during the expedition to Egypt. The Grand Master at the stronghold of Malta, Ferdinand von Hompesch, failed to anticipate or prepare for the threat. The Order continued to exist in a diminished form and negotiated with European governments for a return to power. The Emperor of Russia gave shelter to the largest number of Knights in St Petersburg and this gave rise to the Russian tradition of the Knights Hospitaller and recognition within the Russian Imperial Orders. In gratitude the Knights declared Ferdinand von Hompesch deposed and Emperor Paul I was elected as the new Grand Master. The War of the Fifth Coalition was a European conflict in 1809 that was part of the Napoleonic Wars and the Coalition Wars. The main conflict took place in Central Europe between the Austrian Empire of Francis I and Napoleon's French Empire. The French were supported by their client states—the Kingdom of Italy, the Confederation of the Rhine and the Duchy of Warsaw. Austria was supported by the Fifth Coalition which included the United Kingdom, Portugal, Spain, and the Kingdoms of Sardinia and Sicily, although the latter two took no part in the fighting. Nikolai Ivanovich Depreradovich (; ; Novorossiya, Imperial Russia, 23 October 1767 – St. Peterburg, Imperial Russia, 16 December 1843) was one of the most decorated Russian generals who fought against Napoleonic France. He was a general of the cavalry and adjutant general who took part both in Napoleonic Wars and Finnish Wars. His family, with roots in Serbian lands, moved to Imperial Russia in 1752. He played an important role with Illarion Vasilyevich Vasilchikov (1776–1847) in the grand strategy of the Russian Empire after Alexander I ascended the throne.
