Leonhard Wilhelm Johann Neuman
Leonhard Wilhelm Johann Neuman (also Noiman; pseudonym Leenart Helisalu; December 7, 1885 – October 20, 1933) was an Estonian musician, choir director, singer, and diplomat. Early life and education Leonhard Wilhelm Johann Neuman was born in Tartu, Estonia, the son of the innkeeper Jakob Neumann (1838–1898) and Leena Neumann (née Orraw, 1847–1910). In 1912, Neuman graduated from the School of Law of the University of Tartu. He studied singing in Tartu with Georg Stahlberg from 1908 to 1912, and in Milan and Berlin from 1912 to 1914. He also studied harmony with Rudolf Tobias at the Royal Music Institute of Berlin. From 1915 to 1916, Neuman studied at the Moscow Conservatory; later he studied music in Rome (1921–1922), Leipzig and Berlin (1922–1924), and Vienna (1927). He was a founding member of Fraternitas Estica in 1907. Tartu
Tartu is the second largest city in Estonia after Tallinn. Tartu has a population of 97,759 (as of 2024). It is southeast of Tallinn and 245 kilometres (152 miles) northeast of Riga, Latvia. Looming (magazine)
''Looming'' (English: ''Creation'') is the oldest literary magazine in Estonia. The headquarters is in Tallinn. History The magazine was established in 1923 by the Estonian writer Friedebert Tuglas. Its purpose was the publication and popularization of Estonian contemporary literature. Virtually all known Estonian authors have contributed to the journal. During the Soviet occupation of Estonia, ''Looming'' was controlled by the Writers' Union of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic. Currently, the publication of ''Looming'' is jointly funded by the Estonian Ministry of Culture, the State ''Kultuurkapital'' Foundation and the Estonian Writers' Union. Karl August Hermann
Karl August Hermann (23 September 1851 – 11 January 1909) was an Estonian writer, publicist, linguist and composer. Biography Hermann was born in Võhmanõmme, Põltsamaa Parish, Kreis Fellin in 1851. He studied at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Tartu from 1875. He studied linguistics at Leipzig University from 1878, graduating in 1880 and defending his PhD thesis, ''Der einfache Wortstamm und die drei Lautstufen in der estnischen Sprache'' (''The simple stem and three phonetic levels in the Estonian language''). From 1882 to 1885 he was an editor for '' Eesti Postimees''. In 1886 he acquired the newspaper ''Perno Postimees'', renaming it ''Postimees'', which began publication in Tartu.
