Leonardo Williams
Leonardo Williams is an American restaurateur and politician, currently the Mayor of Durham, North Carolina after winning the 2023 Durham mayoral election. Williams and his wife Zweli opened Zweli's in 2018, a Zimbabwean restaurant in Durham. The couple later opened Ekhaya in the American Tobacco Historic District, American Tobacco Campus in 2022, serving Bantu-inspired tapas. Williams also served as a member of Durham's city council for Ward 3. Williams was sworn in as mayor on December 4, 2023. North Carolina Central University
North Carolina Central University (NCCU or NC Central) is a public historically black university in Durham, North Carolina. Founded by James E. Shepard in affiliation with the Chautauqua movement in 1909, it was supported by private funds from both Northern and Southern philanthropists. It was made part of the state system in 1923, when it first received state funding and was renamed as Durham State Normal School. It added graduate classes in arts and sciences and professional schools in law and library science in the late 1930s and 1940s. In 1969 the legislature designated this a regional university and renamed it as North Carolina Central University. It has been part of the University of North Carolina system since 1972 and offers programs at the baccalaureate, master's, professional, and doctoral levels. Elaine O'Neal (born 1962) is an American attorney, academic administrator, judge, and politician serving as the mayor of Durham, North Carolina. O'Neal is the city's first female African-American mayor. Prior to serving as mayor, O'Neal was the first woman appointed as chief district court judge in Durham County and the first woman North Carolina Superior Court judge in Durham County. She served as an interim dean of the North Carolina Central University School of Law in 2018. The American Tobacco Historic District is a historic tobacco factory complex and national historic district located in Durham, Durham County, North Carolina. The district encompasses 14 contributing buildings and three contributing structures built by the American Tobacco Company and its predecessors and successors from 1874 to the 1950s.
