Lent Bumps 2002
The Lent Bumps 2002 were a series of rowing races held at Cambridge University from Wednesday 1 March 2002 until Saturday 4 March 2002. The event was run as a bumps race and has been held annually in late-February or early March since 1887. See Lent Bumps for the format of the races. In 2002, a total of 121 crews took part (69 men's crews and 52 women's crews), with nearly 1100 participants. The bumps were scheduled to run from Tuesday 28 February. The racing was cancelled on the Tuesday due to extremely strong and gusty winds. Crews in the 1st divisions were unaffected by the cancellation, since the first scheduled race for the top divisions was on Wednesday. Head of the River crews Caius men bumped First and Third Trinity and Emmanuel to regain the headship they lost in 2000. Sport Rowing
Rowing, sometimes called crew in the United States, is the sport of racing boats using oars. It differs from paddling sports in that rowing oars are attached to the boat using oarlocks, while paddles are not connected to the boat. Rowing is divided into two disciplines: sculling and sweep rowing. In sculling, each rower holds two oars—one in each hand, while in sweep rowing each rower holds one oar with both hands. There are several boat classes in which athletes may compete, ranging from single sculls, occupied by one person, to shells with eight rowers and a coxswain, called eights. There are a wide variety of course types and formats of racing, but most elite and championship level racing is conducted on calm water courses long with several lanes marked using buoys. Lady Margaret Boat Club
The Lady Margaret Boat Club (abbreviated to "LMBC" and known as "Maggie") is the rowing club for members of St John's College, Cambridge, England. The club is named after Lady Margaret Beaufort, founder of the College. History LMBC was founded in 1825 by twelve members of the College as the first college boat club in Cambridge. In its original rules, the Club was to "consist of eighteen contributing members, besides honorary ones", and all members had to be able to row. An early member was Patrick Colquhoun who in 1837 instigated the Colquhoun Sculls, in the year in which he won the Wingfield Sculls. The greatest influence in the 1860s and 1870s was J. H. D. Goldie, who raised LMBC to the "Headship of the River", won the "Colquhoun Sculls", and stroked Cambridge four times. Sidney Sussex College Boat Club
Sidney Sussex Boat Club (often referred to as just Sidney or SSBC) is the rowing club for members of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, in England. History Founded in 1837, the club has spent most of its time in the 2nd division of the Lent and May Bumps, with brief times spent in the 1st division. Being a small college, the club has never had the consistency to rise to take a headship of either event, and has been as high as 6th in the Lent Bumps in 1913, and 11th in the May Bumps in 1923. Fitzwilliam College Boat Club
Fitzwilliam College Boat Club is the rowing club for members of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. Prior to the 1960s, ''Fitzwilliam House'' (as it was then called) occupied a position near the bottom of the 2nd division or top half of the 3rd division of the Lent and May Bumps, even finding itself in the 4th division of the Lent Bumps briefly. Between 1959 and 1969, the 1st men's VIII were not bumped in the Lent Bumps, rising to ''Head of the River'' in 1969. Girton College Boat Club
Girton College Boat Club is the rowing club for members of Girton College, Cambridge. Girton was originally a college for women only; male undergraduates were first allowed in 1979. The women's 1st VIII quickly rose to take the headship of the Lent Bumps in 1979 and 1981, but since have hovered largely in the bottom half of the 1st division, with a brief period at the top of the second division in the early 2010s. In the May Bumps, Girton's 1st women rose as high as 3rd in 1979 and 1982, but dropped into the 2nd division by 1994, moving back into the 1st division by 2001. With male undergraduates first arriving in Michaelmas term 1979, a men's crew first appeared in 1980 in both the Lent and May Bumps, rising to the 1st division in the Lent Bumps by 1995. Selwyn College Boat Club
Selwyn College Boat Club (SCBC) is the official rowing club for members of Selwyn College, Cambridge, a constituent college of the University of Cambridge. The Selwyn College Boat Club has one of the highest participation rates of novice rowers of any Oxbridge college, and has performed well in the May Bumps and Lent Bumps in recent years. Notable alumni of the Selwyn College Boat Club include Hugh Laurie, Tom Hollander, and Richard Budgett. In 2014, Selwyn College constructed a new combined boathouse on the River Cam. The new facility provides training and rowing facilities for members of Selwyn and the University of Cambridge. The combined boathouse was designed by RHP Architects at a cost of approximately £2.20 million and was the winner of the 2017 RIBA East Award for outstanding architecture. New Hall Boat Club
Murray Edwards College Boat Club (MECBC) is the rowing club for members of Murray Edwards College, Cambridge, previously known as New Hall. New Hall was founded as a women-only college hence only fields women's crews. The club was founded and known as New Hall Boat Club (NHBC) until 2008, when the club decided to rename itself as Murray Edwards College Boat Club in line with the college name change. New Hall's early progress was good, taking the headship of the Lent Bumps in 1976, 1978 and 1980. A run of poorer results saw the 1st VIII drop into the second division for the first ever time in 2007. Since then, the club has made a strong come-back, regaining a first division position in Lent Bumps in 2013. Churchill College Boat Club
Churchill College Boat Club is the rowing club for members of Churchill College, Cambridge. The club colours are pink and brown, chosen as they were the horse-racing colours of Sir Winston Churchill. In recent years, the club has become famous for its lurid pink racing shells. The men's 1st VIII started the trend in 2002, with the women taking delivery of their own in 2006. The trend has continued to the extent that the club now has a pink double scull. The women also sport pink splash-tops and lycra in the summer months. Churchill College shares a boat house, known as "Combined", with Selwyn, King's and The Leys School. Clare Boat Club
Clare Boat Club is the rowing club for members of Clare College, Cambridge, it was founded in 1831. Like other college boat clubs at the University of Cambridge, the prime constitutional aim of Clare Boat Club is to gain and hold the Headship of the Lent Bumps and May Bumps, now held in eight-oared boats, separately for men and women. In the May Bumps, Clare Men's 1st VIII rose to ''Head of the River'' in 1941 and held it until 1944, regaining the Headship again in 1949. Clare Women's 1st VIII started 1st in the first women's Lent Bumps in 1976 but did not gain the Headship. Queens' College Boat Club (QCBC) is the rowing club for members of Queens' College, Cambridge. The current positions of the men's 1st VIII are 16th in the Lent Bumps and 14th in the May Bumps. The 1st women's VIII currently reside near the bottom of the 1st division in the Lent Bumps and May Bumps, being 15th and 17th, respectively. Pembroke College Boat Club (Cambridge)
Pembroke College Boat Club is the Sport rowing, rowing club for members of Pembroke College, Cambridge. Over the last century, crews from Pembroke have held the headship of the men's Lent Bumps on four occasions, and the headship of the men's May Bumps ten times. The men's 1st VIII spent their entire history in the 1st division of both events, apart from poor performances in the Lent Bumps 2000 and the May Bumps 2003, and the crew is usually found in the top half of the division. The women's 1st VIII first raced in 1985, and have not yet taken the headship of the Lent Bumps, but took the headship of the May Bumps in 1997, 1998, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010. Robinson College Boat Club
Robinson College Boat Club is the rowing club for members of Robinson College, Cambridge. Robinson is one of the newest colleges of Cambridge University and its men's and women's crews both appeared in 1981 for the first time. The men's 1st VIII rose steadily in the Lent Bumps, competing continuously in the 1st division from 1998 to 2008 and rising as high as 9th in 2001. After briefly dropping into the 2nd division in 2008, recent years have seen a resurgence, with blades in 2010, 2012 and 2015 moving Robinson up to 10th on the river in Lents. In the May Bumps, the men's 1st VIII was in the 1st division continuously from 1995 to 2008, finishing 4th on the river in 2003.
