Lenox Merchants
Lenox Merchants were an American semi-professional basketball team based in Lenox, Massachusetts. Founded in 1949 by William "Butch" Gregory, it regularly played exhibition games against NBA teams. During the 1954–1955 season, the Merchants beat the soon-to-be NBA champions, the Syracuse Nationals, twice, and scored victories against the Minneapolis Lakers and the Milwaukee Hawks. Lenox, Massachusetts
Lenox is a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. The town is based in Western Massachusetts and part of the Pittsfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 5,095 at the 2020 census. Lenox is the site of Shakespeare & Company and Tanglewood, summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Lenox includes the villages of New Lenox and Lenoxdale, and is a tourist destination during the summer. History The area was inhabited by Mahicans, Algonquian speakers who largely lived along the Hudson and Housatonic Rivers. Bob Knight (basketball, Born 1929)
Bobby F. Knight (April 30, 1929 – May 23, 2008) was an American professional basketball player. Knight played in the American Basketball League between 1947 and 1953, winning a league championship with the Manchester British-Americans in the 1952–53 season. He also played in two games for the New York Knicks in the National Basketball Association at the start of the 1954–55 NBA season. Skippy Whitaker
Lucian Cary "Skippy" Whitaker (August 29, 1930 – August 1990) was an American professional basketball player. He won an NCAA championship at the University of Kentucky in 1951 and played briefly in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Whitaker, a 6'1 guard, played collegiately at Kentucky for Adolph Rupp. As a junior, he was a member of the Wildcats' 1951 national championship team. Whitaker was drafted by the Indianapolis Olympians in the 1952 NBA draft. He served as a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps after his graduation from the University of Kentucky in May 1952. Ronnie Shavlik
Ronald Dean Shavlik (December 4, 1933 – June 27, 1983) was an American professional basketball player. He was an All-American center for the NC State Wolfpack in the 1950s. He later played briefly for the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Shavlik established a janitorial service, Carolina Maintenance Co., as a college student in 1956. After his playing career, he focused on growing the business. Shavlik died of cancer at the age of 49. His grandson, Shavlik Randolph, played college basketball for Duke University and has played professionally in the NBA. On November 4, 2018, Shavlik was inducted into the Raleigh Hall of Fame. Boris Alexander Nachamkin (December 6, 1933 – February 14, 2018) was an American professional basketball player. Nachamkin was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Russian immigrants, and was Jewish. He played basketball for Thomas Jefferson High School. He then played college basketball for the New York University Violets men's basketball team. He played in the 1953 Maccabiah Games in Israel, winning a gold medal with the US team.
