Steigen ('stejgen) is a municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is part of the traditional district of Salten. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Leinesfjord. Other villages include Bogen, Leines, Nordfold, Nordskot, and Sørskot. Engeløy Airport, Grådussan is located in the northern part of the municipality. Måløy–Skarholmen Lighthouse is located in the Vestfjorden in the western part of the municipality. The only road access to the municipality is via the Steigen Tunnel. Leiranger Church
Leiranger Church ( no, Leiranger kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Steigen Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Leines. It is the main church for the Leiranger parish which is part of the Salten prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Sør-Hålogaland. The yellow, wooden church was built in a long church style in 1911 by the architect Nils Ryjord. The church seats about 500 people. History The earliest existing historical records of this church date back to 1589, but it had been built some time before then. One of the existing church bells has the date 1523, so this could be the year of the church's founding. In 1690, the church was described as a small wooden church with a small choir and sacristy. As the church aged, it was no longer in good condition. In 1721, the choir was rebuilt. In 1734, the old church was torn down and replaced with a new church on the same site. Nordfold is a village in Steigen Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The village of Nordfold lies along the Nordfolda, a northern branch of the main Folda fjord. It lies about east of the municipal centre of Leinesfjorden. It is the location of the Nordfold Church. History The village was the administrative centre of the old municipality of Nordfold which existed from 1906 until 1964. Salten is a traditional district in Nordland county, Norway. It includes the municipalities of Meløy, Gildeskål, Bodø, Beiarn, Saltdal, Fauske, Sørfold, Steigen, and Hamarøy. Salten covers an area of about and has a population (2016) of about 73,375 people. The district borders Helgeland in the south (see Saltfjellet), Ofoten in the north, Sweden in the east, and Vestfjorden (and Lofoten) in the west.
