Leila Rankine
Dorothy Leila Rankine (31 December 1932 – 15 January 1993) was an Aboriginal community worker, musician, and poet. Known as Leila Rankine, she was a founding member of Adelaide Aboriginal Orchestra and the Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Music. Early life and education Leila Rankine, of Ngarrindjeri and Kaurna descent, was born on 31 December 1932 in the Adelaide suburb of Rose Park. She was the daughter of Rebecca Kumi (née Harris) and Daniel Wilson. She grew up and was educated at the Point McLeay Mission Station (now Raukkan) on Lake Alexandrina. Life and work Married and with five children, Rankine joined the Council of Aboriginal Women of South Australia at its inception in 1966. Alongside Ruby Hammond and Gladys Elphick, she strove to improve education for Aboriginal people. Rose Park is a suburb with a population of 1,374 in the South Australian capital city of Adelaide. It is located east of Adelaide's central business district. Rose Park is a leafy, tree-lined and wealthy inner suburb containing a number of historical and contemporary attractions. Much of the area's 19th-century housing stock has been recognised with heritage protection. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), known as ScreenSound Australia from 1999 to 2004, is Australia's audiovisual archive, responsible for developing, preserving, maintaining, promoting and providing access to a national collection of film, television, sound, radio, video games, new media, and related documents and artefacts. The collection ranges from works created in the late nineteenth century when the recorded sound and film industries were in their infancy, to those made in the present day. Monarto, South Australia
Monarto is a locality in South Australia west of the Murray River. It is north of the South Eastern Freeway between the Callington, South Australia, Callington and Murray Bridge, South Australia, Murray Bridge exits 63 km from Adelaide. Most of the residents of Monarto run small hobby-like farms, raising cows, sheep and horses. Crops in the area include wheat, oats and barley. In the 1970s Monarto was proposed to be the site of a new satellite city of Adelaide originally known as "New Murray Town". By the turn of the century the proposal had been completely abandoned. David "Daisy" Day (1951 – 1 May 2015) was an Australian radio broadcaster. He is known for his work in Adelaide, South Australia and for founding the South Australian Music Hall of Fame, also referred to as the SA Music Hall of Fame. Biography Day began his disc jockey career at 16 in Moree, New South Wales, before moving to Adelaide in 1973 to work firstly at 5KA, then SAFM and, in 1995, Triple M. In 2013, Day published his autobiography ''Rock Jock''. Day died on 1 May 2015, aged 63.
