Featherstone Rovers
Featherstone Rovers are a professional rugby league club in Featherstone, West Yorkshire, England, who play in the Championship. Featherstone is a former coal mining town with a population of around 16,000 and Rovers are one of the last "small town teams" which were common in rugby league in the early 20th century. The club has produced many junior players who have gone on to play for Super League clubs. Their local rivals are Castleford and Wakefield Trinity, and in the Championship, Halifax. The club have won the Challenge Cup three times, in 1967, 1973 and 1983, and been League Champions once, in 1977. History 1889–1902: Origins Featherstone Trinity RUFC were formed in 1889. Rugby league football, commonly known as just rugby league and sometimes football, footy, rugby or league, is a full-contact sport played by two teams of thirteen players on a rectangular field measuring 68 metres (75 yards) wide and 112–122 metres (122 to 133 yards) long with H shaped posts at both ends. The 1986–87 Rugby Football League season was the 92nd season of rugby league football. Sixteen clubs competed for the Championship which was determined by League position. Season summary The Silk Cut Challenge Cup Winners were Halifax who beat St. Helens 19-18 in the final. The John Player Special Trophy Winners were Wigan who beat Warrington 18-4 in the final. The Stones Bitter Premiership Trophy Winners were Wigan who beat Warrington 8-0 in the final. Wigan beat Oldham 27–6 to win the Lancashire County Cup, and Castleford beat Hull F.C. 31–24 to win the Yorkshire County Cup. Championship Stones Bitter League Champions were Wigan for the tenth time in their history, losing only two league games all season - both to Warrington.
