Leader of the Opposition is a constitutionally sanctioned office in Seychelles. The Leader of the Opposition is elected by members of the National Assembly of Seychelles, National Assembly who are members of others parties than the one which nominated the incumbent President of Seychelles. The position was created in 1993 as part of the transition to multiparty politics. The unicameral National Assembly (; Seychellois Creole, Creole: ''Lasanble Nasyonal'') is the Seychelles's legislative body. The National Assembly in its current constellation formed following 2020 Seychellois general election, elections held on 22–24 October 2020, with a total of 35 members. The current Speaker of the National Assembly is Roger Mancienne, in office since 28 October 2020. James Mancham
Sir James Richard Marie Mancham KBE (11 August 1939 – 8 January 2017) was a Seychellois politician who founded the Seychelles Democratic Party and was the first President of Seychelles from 1976 to 1977. Political career James's father, Richard Mancham, a successful businessman, sent James to law school in England. When Britain announced its intention to give independence to the colony, Mancham founded the Democratic Party (S.D.P.), and served as its leader until February 2005. France-Albert René founded an opposition party, the Seychelles People's United Party (S.P.U.P) with the support of the Soviet Union. As Chief Minister of the colony, Mancham promoted tourism to the Seychelles and arranged for the building of the airport that was to make the Seychelles accessible to the rest of the world. The Seychelles Democratic Party is a List of political parties in Seychelles, political party in Seychelles. It was founded by the late Sir James Mancham and David Joubert in July 1964, and governed the country from 1970 to 1977. Wavel Ramkalawan
Wavel Ramkalawan (born 15 March 1961) is a Seychellois politician and Anglican priest who has been serving as the President of Seychelles since 26 October 2020. Ramkalawan was an opposition MP from 1993 to 2011 and 2016 to 2020. He also served as the Leader of the Opposition from 1998 to 2011 and 2016 to 2020. On 25 October 2020, Ramkalawan won the presidential election, the country's first such victory for an opposition candidate since independence, marking its first successful peaceful transition of power. Seychelles National Party
The Seychelles National Party (SNP) is a liberal political party in Seychelles. Its followers emphasize active multiparty democracy, respect for human rights and liberal economic reforms. It was founded in response to what it called the "totalitarian regime" of former President France-Albert René. Popular Democratic Movement (Seychelles)
The Popular Democratic Movement (PDM), formerly Democratic Turnhalle Alliance (DTA), is an amalgamation of political parties in Namibia, registered as one singular party for representation purposes. In coalition with the United Democratic Front, it formed the official opposition in Parliament until the parliamentary elections in 2009. The party currently holds five seats in the Namibian National Assembly and one seat in the Namibian National Council. Francesca Monnaie (born 1986) is a Seychelles politician who served as Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly from 17 May 2016 until 27 September 2016. She was Secretary-General of the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) from 2011 to 2016. Sebastien Pillay (born 26 January 1978) is a Seychelles politician. He has served as Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly since 28 October 2020. Biography Sebastien Pillay was born on 26 January 1978.
