Le Jean Bart (2002)
Jean Bart is the name given to the replica of a 1670, 84-gun, ship-of-the-line, that is being constructed by the Association Tourville at Gravelines, Dunkirk, to the plans of the seventeenth century ship builder Colbert. It has European funding through the Heroes2c programme. Jean Bart, the corsaire Jean Bart was a native of Dunkirk (Dunkerque). The project The project is being managed by the Association Tourville. The keel of the ship was laid down in 2002, and it expected that it will take 20 years to complete. It uses traditional seventeenth century open air ship building techniques and it is hoped to preserve these skills for another generation. The ship is being built next to the Basin Vauban, in Gravelines, France. From 2010 to 2013 it had the support of the European Development Fund's Interreg IV, Heroes2c scheme. Jean Bart
Jean Bart (; ; 21 October 1650 – 27 April 1702) was a French naval commander and privateer. Early life Jean Bart was born in Dunkirk in 1650 to a seafaring family, the son of Jean-Cornil Bart (c. 1619-1668) who has been described variously as a fisherman or corsair commander serving for the Dutch Republic. His grandfather, Cornil weus, was a vice-admiral and fought the Dutch on behalf of Spain at the beginning of the Eighty Years' War. His great-grandfather, Michel Jacobsen (1560-1632) distinguished himself in the service of the Spanish crown, bringing back the Invincible Armada after his failed attempt to invade England in 1588. He was appointed vice-admiral by Philip IV of Spain. In 1622, his great-uncle, Jan Jacobsen, also in the service of Spain, blew himself up with his ship, the ''Saint-Vincent'', rather than surrender. Gravelines
Gravelines (, ; ; ) is a commune in the Nord department in Northern France. It lies at the mouth of the river Aa southwest of Dunkirk. It was formed in the 12th century around the mouth of a canal built to connect Saint-Omer with the sea. As it was on the western borders of Spanish territory in Flanders it became heavily fortified, some of which remains. There is a market in the town square (Place Charles Valentin) on Fridays. The "Arsenal" approached from the town square is home to an extensive and carefully displayed art collection. There are modern bronze statues in the grounds. The town is also home to French basketball club BCM Gravelines. The Gravelines Belfry is one of 56 belfries of Belgium and France that is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in recognition of its architecture and importance in the history of municipal power in the region.
