LeRoy Pernell
LeRoy Pernell is a former dean of the Northern Illinois University College of Law and Florida A&M University College of Law. Legal career Pernell entered academia in 1975 when he joined the faculty of Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. He also served as vice provost of the office of minority affairs at Ohio State University from 1994 to 1997. In 1997, Pernell became the dean and professor of law at Northern Illinois University College of Law. Under Pernell’s leadership, NIU Law was nationally recognized for its diversity efforts. The Princeton Review ranked NIU Law among the Top 10 law schools in the nation as having the most diverse faculty for three straight years in 2005, 2006, and 2007. Northern Illinois University College of Law (NIU Law) is one of four public law schools in the U.S. state of Illinois. It is one of two public law schools in the Chicago area. The College of Law was founded as the Lewis University College of Law in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, in 1975. Florida A&M University College of Law or FAMU College of Law is an ABA-accredited law school in Orlando, Florida, United States. It is part of Florida A&M University. History On December 21, 1949, a division of law was established at the then Florida A&M College and the first class was admitted in 1951. The legislature established the school because no "separate but equal" state-supported law school existed for African-Americans at that time.
