Lawrence Cutajar
Lawrence Cutajar (born March 5, 1960, in Luqa) is a Maltese policeman, and served as commissioner of the Malta Police Force from 2016 to 2020. Biography Cutajar read for a Diploma in Law and Administration at the University of Malta. In February 1979 he joined the Malta Police Force as a Constable. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in September 1983, before graduating as an Inspector a year later. Cutajar achieved the rank of Superintendent in 2000. Throughout his career, Cutajar worked mainly in district policing, serving also with other sections of the Police such as the Command and Control Room, Airport Security, Vice Squad and Intelligence. In February 2014, Cutajar was appointed Assistant Commissioner in charge of the Police Immigration Branch. On April 27, 2016, he was promoted to head the Police as Acting Commissioner. Luqa
Luqa ( mt, Ħal Luqa, , ) is a town located in the Southern Region of Malta, 4.3 km away from the capital Valletta. With a population of 5,945 as of March 2014, it is a small but densely populated settlement which is typical of Malta's older towns and villages. Luqa is centered around a main square which contains a church dedicated to St. Andrew. The patron saint's traditional feast is celebrated on the first Sunday of July, with the liturgical feast being celebrated on 30 November. The Malta International Airport is located in Luqa. Notable residents of the town included Michelangelo Sapiano (1826–1912), a well-known clockmaker and inventor whose work includes the clock in the parish church's belfry. Joseph Muscat
Joseph Muscat (born 22 January 1974) is a Maltese politician who served as the prime minister of Malta from 2013 to 2020, and as the leader of the Labour Party from June 2008 to January 2020. Muscat was re-elected as prime minister in the elections of 3 June 2017 (55.04% after 54.83% in 2013). Previously he was a member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 2004 to 2008. He was the leader of the opposition from October 2008 to March 2013. Pilatus Bank
Pilatus was a Maltese bank located in Ta' Xbiex. The bank created in 2013 and closed in 2018. History Pilatus Bank started its operations in January 2014. Its owner was Seyed Ali Sadr Hasheminejad, known as Ali Sadr. The bank came into the spotlight after reporter Daphne Caruana Galizia accused the bank of laundering funds from allegedly corrupt schemes on behalf of offshore companies and individuals. After an 18-month investigation by a magistrate in Malta, it was determined the claims were untrue. Ali Sadr was charged with violating US sanctions against Iran in the United States in March 2018. 2019 Malta Political Crisis
A political and institutional crisis within the Republic of Malta followed the uncovering of alleged links between government officials and the 2017 assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. The Prime Minister's Chief of Staff Keith Schembri and Minister for Tourism Konrad Mizzi resigned following the arrest of businessman Yorgen Fenech in connection with the murder. On 1 December 2019 the former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat announced his intention to resign on 12 January 2020 after increased pressure from 2019 Maltese protests. Robert Abela
Robert Abela (born 7 December 1977) is a Maltese lawyer and politician who has served as prime minister of Malta and leader of Labour Party since 2020. The son of former President George Abela, he was elected to Parliament in 2017. Abela was sworn in as prime minister following the resignation of Joseph Muscat on 13 January 2020. Yorgen Fenech (born 23 November 1981) is a Maltese businessman whose main interests are casinos and hotels in Malta. He was head of the Tumas Group and director of the Maltese-Azerbaijan-German company ElectroGas Malta. Suspected of bribing members of the Maltese government, in November 2019 Fenech was arrested as a suspect in the murder of the investigative-journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. Daphne Anne Caruana Galizia (; 26 August 1964 – 16 October 2017) was a Maltese writer, journalist, blogger and anti-corruption activist, who reported on political events in Malta. In particular, she focused on investigative journalism, reporting on government corruption, nepotism, patronage, allegations of money laundering, links between Malta's online gambling industry and organized crime, Malta's citizenship-by-investment scheme, and payments from the government of Azerbaijan. Caruana Galizia's national and international reputation was built on her regular reporting of misconduct by Maltese politicians and politically exposed persons.
